I know the car is getting on a bit now but I suffered the dreaded soft top motor failer today :x :x :x . As the days are getting shorter and colder I might just leave it till next year to fix it now.
 
So having not yet had the pleasure of trying it. Just how much of a pain is putting the top up and down with a bust motor?
 
Some comfort there for the day mine goes then. Hope it's not too expensive to get it sorted.
 
I'm handy with the tools so it should not break the bank.Mind you I need a major clean out of the garage and a place to keep a few motorbikes for a weekend.I think it might just be easier to borrow my parents :) .
 
I'd like to know how many people with the failed motors maintain their drains regularly. Just to gauge if it does actually help much.
 
If the drains get blocked, the area where the motor is fills with water. Goodbye motor. It's a crap design and a PITA to get to the drains

Lots of failures with clear drains. Keeping them clear is a waste of time, don't bother. :fuelfire:

But seriously, IMHO, most that did not maintain their drains had their motors fail some time ago, and they now maintain their drains. We are now seeing more clear drain failures, partly just due to age (and climate). So maintaining drains prolongs motor life, but does not prevent eventual failure.
 
I have never cleaned mine, though visual inspection of the right hand side one is easy with the top down and it was clear / dry. The driver side I just never got round to, but you will never clean it out properly from the bottom only. My car has been garaged since February and I thought it would at least dry out... Failed in August.

Interestingly my Indy said the same as bcworkz - doesn't make much difference because they can get blocked so easily. Just a sh1t design :x
 
I only got the car in February and I did kleen the drains out the best I could just after but I really don't know if they had been done at any time in the cars history.When i get the roof off I'm going to have a good look and see if I can get a little extra drainage added.
 
group buy of motors anyone. if its a case of when not if the next cheap one i find i might snap up. even if it doesnt go its worth having i think.

That's a good idea, but don't expend too much effort, as it only will prolong the inevitable. :headbang:
What we really need is an access panel to swap out the motor without much bother. Sort of a giant fuel flap, after all, we have to replace the motor after about a dozen tank fulls! :headbang:

Then again, this happens enough that mechanics should be quite practised at roof removal, such that it shouldn't be any more bother than changing a starter or alternator. The question is, will they adjust their labour rates accordingly?
