Wifey is fancying a weekend in Budapest for her birthday
We've never been before so any recommendations regarding hotels or things to do would be much appreciated :)

I can speak on this subject.

Last year me and the wife went out on an assignment for 23 days. The clients guest were staying at the Boscolo (5 star), but when we were walking abound, the 4 seasons Gresham Palace (overlooks the Danube and by all accounts is very swanky. We stayed at the Novotel on the Buda side. Its right next to the tube station so ok for getting about. not too pricey and more of a business hotel.

Places to go on the weekend are the ruin bars (evening time for a drink), day time, fisherman's Bastion, The Citadel (big fort on top of a hill that overlooks the Danube),

What ever you do, take and evening river cruise ( don't go on the small craft that looks like they will sink) go on a panoramic boat.

I cannot recommend enough the Quayside restaurant (boat restaurant - Static) called the the spoons. Insist you you have a table on the riverside as when evening comes the view is so romantic.

Finally, if you get time but not a serious necessity, the Szechenye Thermal Baths are hot springs, but quite expensive.

Don't bother with Memento Park (its were they parked all of the old communist statues) truly not worth it.

If you go visit the parliament building, you must take time to walk down to the river side and turn left to walk towards the cast iron shoes on the riverside which is a memorial concept in remembrance of the victims of the pro nazi Hungarians who regularly cause Jews to disrobe and then were executed with their bodies allowed to float down river for all to see. Its a very moving tribute.

Beyond that it you still have time, there are flea markets and shops that women are drawn to.

Finally, go over the chain bridge and ride the funicular up to the royal palace.

We loved it. good food and live entertainment at http://www.ladocafe.hu . this was great food and drink and 150m from the Novotel, alternatively you could use McDonalds which is also 150m from the Novotel LOL

I cannot express the pleasure the funicular journey will bring it shows the two cities as they were and gives breathtaking views.

Walk around the perimeter wall at the top will astound every part of your senses.

Fantastic time there but it was 25 years ago.

:D

This all depends upon whether or not you are an art lover. I'm a huge fan of public statuary and for me a trip to Memento Park gave me a taste of what Budapest must have been like during its Communist days.

There are a couple of superb "world class" statues at the castle as well as several other lovely monuments in the city.

Budapest is well worth a visit. Look out for all the bullet marks on many of the main buildings.

Don't whatever you do get into a random cab and ask to be taken to a strip club. Not me but a colleague got taken for a few thousand quid, marched to cash point, then hotel to get passport then bureau de change to get cash on credit card, all the while another colleague helsd at said club as "collateral". Police were called and simply said sorry you have to pay. I was safely tucked up in bed in hotel having got w@nkered on very nice red and desert wine.....

The Corinthia hotel is really nice. http://www.corinthia.com/hotels/budapest/

Not cheap but a fabulous place to stay and in a great location. If you decide to eat and drink on the Buda side be prepared to pay a lot more as that is the touristy side.

This post just caught my eye. My girlfriend and I are going on the 8th of Feb for 3 days. Sounds like a really interesting place :) :)

Went to Budapest a few years ago and ended up eating here a few times. Has the most fantastic wine list with 50 or so wines by the glass.
High points were fresh pan fried foie gras which we enjoyed with an amazing glass of Tokay.
Prices are very reasonable for the quality of the food and wine.

Worked in Budapest for 6 months a couple if years ago. Fantastic city, loved it. Not sure if it's still there but Hemingway's restaurant is very good!

Love this forum ,thanks for the info chaps :)
