Dropping the family car in for an annual service with these guys next week. Heard good things about them and apparently seasoned with an ///M. If so, another great option to have in SE so will report back once the service is complete.

Well I'm back and I'm happy. After owner Joe managed to fit me in today for the Golf's annual service I dropped the car off at midday and picked up half an hour ago. Serviced and a great price too [compared to previous annual service at a place in Charlton]. Few advisory items to look at and Joe took the time to walk through them with me on the car. All relatively easy fixes but will of course keep the 'SE(3) Shed' nicely on the road for a few years more. The workshop has BMW references everywhere so he's clearly a fan and they also do servicing and inspections - even on older S50 engines

There have been moments when I've wanted to get rid of the Y reg Mk4 but she's done me proud really. Only last years water pump and cambelt change making any serious wallet dentage. Coming up to 40k miles too so plenty of life in the old girl yet and I'm more inclined to put any A3 Sportback/Mk6 Golf/1 Series plans on hold - especially now I've discovered what could be my go to local garage.

If you're in South East London, North Kent or South Essex you could do worse than drop Joe a line at Brown Motor Works

Nice one Inks, I need a garage. I do 99% of things myself, it's just when I'm under time constraints or whatever I really need someone.

Without sounding daft, is he definitely 100% honest?

I tried a place in Cambridge when I was working there, living out of a B&B and couldn't do a thing myself, a BMW specialist, the bloke seemed so genuine, took the car in for a knock, I came in and took a look under it whilst it was up there, my new front arms etc were still mint.

He said he'd found the issue, and that I could have the front arm bushes done at the same time as they were looking tired. He went all sheepish on me and basically tried to just move on with the conversation. I went a bit mental and never used him again.

Glad to hear it ;)

Although I've still NEVER found a car where the wheels were as un-willing to come off as your old zed that time.

Yeah, there was none of that here (shocking by the way!). I had the advisories from my last service remembered and it matched perfectly which I think is a good test. Seemed very genuine and had time which again I see as a good thing. As I say, also read some good things elsewhere so took a punt.

Brilliant news, I know the guy in Cambridge was shocking, he tried a few "idiot tricks" as they're affectionately known, and I only let on after a while that I knew my cars. I then left it a while long to let on about the barrage of new parts I'd fitted.

People like that often lose out because where I generally know my stuff, a lot of friends and family ask for recommendations etc.

Yep, but I suspect they hadn't been off in a long time :-) the new owner is on here and has got new wheels, looks ace. Might be calling on your skills soon as the M3 needs new front discs soon...
