Broken window regulator + now Airbag light!

The other week my window regulator broke... I couldn't get it fixed over Christmas as I was busy and would not be using the car much anyway. Anyway, I got in the car today and the airbag light came on half way through the trip. Now I assumed it would be something to do with the window, but reading up on others experiences I am unsure.

A while back purplemattfish and I took apart the doors to deadmatt them and tighten up the windows... it all seemed to go fine and has been working without problems. During the process we did not touch the airbags at all, so I would think there is a chance that it is not that which is the problem.

The last time I was in the car I do rember the airbag light "seemed" to stay on a little longer than usual, then went out, but that might have been my imagination.

From what I read the only way to get the airbag reset is main dealer. I also have access to a good independent BMW specialist but am not sure if they will be able to clear the code?

What do you guys think? This is likely to cripple me if all this work (window/airbag light etc) has to go through main dealer.

One last thing... I did have a bump a while back and the rear bumper was replaced... could it be anything to do with that?

Hi,

Unless you disconnected the airbag on the door and at the same time had the ignition on then I can't see this as the problem unless you damaged the loom while working on it or something similar (unbolted it to work but left it dangling on the loom, etc.)

If the rear bumper impact caused it and that's unlikely without a major bang it would have surely been on from then onwards?

Indy's can clear codes, but strangely many do not have the key to work on Z4's airbags despite having every other car you can imagine, indeed I can myself now on the airbag as it's one of the modules that Carsoft can read, but not read all the issues.

I think you're in for £40 to let the stealer diagnose/try to reset as I have had to recently for what turns out to be an 'open circuit' in the airbag system. To be repaired soon by them.

Cheers for that... I am a little nervous about simply reseting it anyway, as if there is a fault surely it will just come back on at some point. Do you know what sort of figure we would be looking at for the stealer to rectify the open-circuit?

Not got a figure as it was due to go in but then for various reasons I had to cancel and need to book it back in. I guess the open circuit could be a broken loom wire, faulty connector, or a damaged component. I don't expect it to be cheap as they'll be a strip down for whatever it is.

I would not worry about clearing an airbag code as if it does not fix it then it will simlly come back on next time the circuit is checked by the car, so nothing lost.

I was really meaning I don't like the idea of paying BMW £££ to clear it, only for it to come back on. :(

Sure - ~I see what you mean. I guess that would only happen if you just asked them to diagnose it and be charged for that. If it could not be reset they would chrge to diagnose and then the work to fix it. Can't see they would simply reset it and allow it to come back on else you would be straight back complaining.
