Broken Strut Brace :( ** FIXED **

Yeah I have a place I could take it to to get an answer. Will wait for CS to come back to my email enquiry first as it isn't particularly local to me :)

Hi. I'm a newbie here and thought this is the best place to find out more about the car. Just got my 2.5 Z4 yesterday (07 plate). Wow, what a fun drive. Its not perfect but I got it for a decent price I think, and its a 10 year old car so it isn't going to be perfect.
My knowledgeable friend who came with me to view the car noticed that one of the top mounting strut brace is cracked so I will have to get this welded. The braces don't look like theyre terribly robust so I wonder what their actual function is?

I've repaired a couple of these now, all have gone in the same way as the OP's pic. Not a big job, but paintwork on the strut tower and bracket needs touching up afterwards due to the heat. Strangely enough, on two of them, the owners mentioned that they had recently tightened the nuts - So I'm wondering if over torqueing them is the cause of the subsequent breakage as it's been over stressed??

It mightn't look like they do much, but they do.. In fact BMW say if they break, the car should not be driven...

Do you have a friendly MOT place you could take it to. Wonder if it could be an MOT failure.

Yes, that's a failure as it's an original part of the structure.

However, if you were to remove BOTH of them, I bet it would pass, although as I posted above, in the event of a failure BMW say the car should not be driven..

Mike

And yes - HOLY THREAD REVIVAL lol..
