Broken Strut Brace :( ** FIXED **

Is there a torque value for the nuts on either end of the braces ? I am getting a creak occasionally that I think may be a nut that is not tight enough, but I don't want to over-torque them...

Hi Bing,

I found the below in another thread, hopefully someone will confirm its correct :)

45ft lbs for the larger nuts on the brace it's self. I can't recall exactly what the suspension tower ones were but it was low, around 25 -30 I think

Dogmatic6, thanks - appreciated

That's 61nm, right ?

I just want to do the brace ones - not touching the tower bolts, best left well alone by someone as hamfisted as me :P

Hi All,

Thats my strut brace tab/bracket fixed. Local garage welded it this morning for £30 they also dropped the shock mount underneath in case the heat from the welder damaged it.

Here's an updated pic

Cheers

Just found this thread, dealer pointed out mine had also snapped while it was with them for other work.

Waiting for the dealership to confirm whether the AUC warranty will cover it (it better damned do).

Snapped in a pretty much identical place to the images on the skydrive!

Well my bracket ended up cracking again around a year or so later in a different place on the same bracket. I ended up buying two replacement brackets from the dealer and getting a local garage to replace them :)

As my car hasn't been near a main dealer in 4yrs I didn't even try to get it done on goodwill lol

The dealership said it will be quite a bit of bodywork to fix it so not sure what they plan on doing. They are rather elusive at present as always when I chase them though.

I'll get an image of it at some point. Been getting back from work after dark recently so wouldn't see anything.

It has snapped on the bend above the welds if I remember rightly

That would be what mine has done, 2 snapped and one fully come off

Depending on the cost to fix you could look at something like this.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ultra-Racing-3-Points-Front-Strut-Brace-Bar-for-BMW-Z4-E85-2-5-02-08-TW3-1175-/321104256242?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&fits=Car+Make%3ABMW%7CModel%3AZ4&hash=item4ac34e1cf2

I am expecting BMW to fix it for me at no cost, never had a strut brace actually fitted to it though

I forgot you still have a warranty, so yes they should fix.

So they AUC warranty does not cover it for some reason.

Have taken it up with the dealership principal to see if they will pay for it out of their pocket instead.

I don't quite understand how they fail to cover it under warranty though.

I would fighting this, it's structural part of the car. Please do not give up on this.

What reason did they give?

As you know, whilst the AUC warranty supplied with your vehicle covers all manner of items, unfortunately this issue isn’t covered. We have, therefore, now approached BMW UK Customer Service on your behalf to establish the possibility of a goodwill claim. I will let you know the outcome.

Email response from the Dealership Principal.

I am also going to pursue it directly with BMW UK CS to see what they say in either response.
