As so many of us have had broken springs (& there is a list in the problems section), I thought it might be interesting to find out just what percentage of forum users have had this problem.

BMW do not recognise this as a common issue, they say “the percentage of repairs is minor compared to the 200,000 Z4's sold all over the world”.

I would think many Z4 owners could be driving around blissfully unaware that they have broken springs. But as most people on this forum are more clued up on the car let’s see if we can find out the true percentage of Z4 owners who have had this problem.

You can check multiple boxes if you have had some replace under warrantee & some not under warrantee.

One rear spring on 3.0Si while I had it, both rears on my Z4 M Coupe
Only one replaced under warranty.

2 rear springs on 03 2.5 replaced at my cost but did give me a discount on springs and 1 rear spring on another 2.5 i have just brought not changed yet

OSR spring went within 1 hour of picking up my coupe - fixed free of charge through AUC warranty. The mechanic I spoke to admitted it was a common fault on zeds.

Both rear springs failed & replaced after 17500 miles on my 07 2.5Si. Out of AUC warranty but managed to get BMW & dealer contributions, paid £117 for both in May 11.

As a condition of sale they replaced a suspension spring although I don't remember which one. If another one goes, I'll go the way of many and purchase some Eibach.

Not only Zed's. The place that changed both my rears said broken springs were just as common (if not more) on the 3 Series.

a guy at work knows someone at Ford who's told him that UK spec cars (I guess at least Ford's) have higher, low temperature rated springs than e.g. German cars where winters temps normally drop lower for longer. Maybe we are seeing more problems in the UK owing to colder winters?

No breakage, just decided to be proactive and replaced my oem Msport with Eibachs. Besides peace of mind, there was a slight improvement in ride quality.

Just taken the old broken one off & was amazed to see the broken bit still sitting there since the end of March!
