Broken Springs - List (add yourself if you've been affected)

I've heard this metallic 'chinking' sound for the past few days when going over bumps and after checking the boot for loose items and finding nothing, I thought I'd better take the OSR wheel off to have a look at the spring, sure enough the bottom coil of the spring was sitting loose in the wishbone! As we are going away in a few days in the Zed, I thought I'd better replace it/them. No time to get a new one off ebay but luckily ECP had a couple of Sachs ones in stock. With their discount code 'midmonth25' I got 25% off so the pair were £91. :D

After uncoupling the shock absorberI used a scissor jack (pic below) to open the wishbone a bit and changed them both in no time - 30 mins first one 15 mins second one. With the wheels back on, the ride height seemed a little high and so I went for a 5mile jaunt and on return they are back to where the NSR was on the old spring before I changed it. :)
The Sachs ones from ECP are larger diameter at the ends than the originals and so I hope these won't break as easily.

Z4 Coupe, OSR spring replaced (under AUC warranty). Spring must've gone between 21-23K.

Forgot to post earlier - but NSR spring replaced in March. No longer under warranty, done at Indy for £125.

Its a joke how many of these have failed.

Both my rear springs went on my Roadster, If the same happened on my Coupe out of warranty then i'd go aftermarket.

Wouldnt pay to fit the BMW rubbish again.

Did you know the OEM springs are Eibach? ;)

We I can add Rachel's car to the list. Both rears broken on 60k miles. Whether they are the originals i do not know as she has only had it for 10k miles.

When I pulled the MoT history for my newly acquired Z4MR, I found that it has failed an MoT at 25,100 miles and 4 years old for "Nearside Rear Coil spring fractured (2.4.C.1a)".
Sigh. When I was in my BMW dealership last week, having my brake fluid changed, they reported that my Nearside Rear Coil spring was again broken. So that's only 10,210 miles and less than 3 years since it last went. Not exactly what you'd expect from a performance sports car, is it?

Good news is that they will replace it under my Extended Warranty and the Service Advisor told me that, because it's an ///M, they will replace both rear springs. (She said that with non-M's they only replace the broken side).

both my rear springs are broken, found out when car went in to get exhaust repaired, can anyone point me to a dealer where i can get replacements without going to main stealers its a 2.0i sport with the m sport suspension someone suggested Suplex UK but not getting an answer from them
thanks

Bought my 3.0 litre Z4 new in 2003, during which time it has covered a very careful 39000 miles and is now on it`s 4th set of rear road springs ! So far, even though the car is almost ten years old, BMW are still covering the material costs probably because my wife works for our local dealer. BMW`s explanation swings between lack of use to excessive use over speed bumps ! It has in fact never been over a speed bump in its life.
My car is due for it`s next MOT within a couple of weeks and I am dreading a spring failure once again. Oh and by the way it has done some 1500 miles in the twelve months since its last MOT.
There is a problem with these bloody springs. When are BMW going to accept that and produce ones that work ?

O/S Rear on its way out, not quite snapped but will need replacing before the MOT :(

I've been lurking here since getting my Z4 last year. I've now become another victim of the dreaded broken spring phenomenon!

E86 - 3.0si Sport
2007
40k miles

Both rear springs broken - NSR at the bottom, OSR at the top. Not picked up during the recent MOT at BMW either (now they've both been changed the metallic clinking noise present before the MOT has gone).

Goodwill claim turned down by BMW on the basis of age of car. I can't say I agree with their reasoning. If they're expected to degrade with age, surely they should be part of the service schedule?!

44k miles and yesterday the metallic clanking appeared, particular when turn left and with bumps that kicked the body upwards. Suspect left side rear coil spring has failed; right hand side replaced under auc warrantee 2 years ago (wouldn't change both at the time grrr).

Are there any bushes worth changing as part of this job? Suspect a garage will insist on having both replaced as a pair.

The post above suggesting they replace both on an M is not my experience sadly!

39K Z4mr OSR spring gone.

Planning to fit a pair next weekend any recommendations on where to source original spec parts (or part nos) other than from BMW?

Thanks

57K Z4 2.5 Roadster

Cotswold BMW Gloucester found one spring cracked when the Z went in for an oil service last week. Replaced under extended warranty.

Also advised front bushes needed replacing. Extended warranty covered that as well as less than 60k.

Result

I used realoem http://www.realoem.com to look up the part numbers and then http://www.cooper-bmw-parts.co.uk/ to order the parts which arrived within a few days at my home.

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=BT92&mospid=49344&btnr=33_1335&hg=33&fg=45

I ordered parts, 2, 11,12,13 which may be overkill but a new bolt won't hurt and the two rubber pads are only a fiver each and worth changing in my mind.

02 Hex Bolt M12X1,5X60 07119900402
11 SPRING PAD LOWER 33531094518
12 Barrel spring rear 33507836827
