AND ADD ME TO THE LIST CHRIS L , just one rear offside but replaced x 2 with Lefjofors springs = £240 fitted by an independent garage just over 1 year ago, so just out of warranty now and they have held up well, needless to say i totally avoided BMW spings again.

Drivers side rear spring failed on my Z4M on Sunday, fixed on monday - no charge as was under AUC warantee (it had been checked 3 weeks previous hmmm).

Me too.Took the missus out for a spin and heard a "clang". Trusted garage confirmed the inevitable. £110 fitted. Would of had both done, but they only had one in stock. Aiming to get the other done in the near future just for safety.

Has BMW not admitted there is a problem with the springs and issued a recall? To replace this potentially dangerous fault?

not to our knowledge...

but it is not just BMW that suffers! my mothers' SLK has also had broken springs.

think it is more a problem of our roads :(

Z4C - 3.0SI
Year - 2006 (56)
Mileage - 38,000
Spring OSR

broken part was loose inside the spring cup and was rattling for 2 weeks before I figured out what it was

Both rear springs broken

Detected by BMW dealer at MOT and replaced with significant contribution from the manufacturer.

Rear offside just broke this afternoon (2004 3.0), 68K miles, judging by the mileages on here it's probably gone a couple of times before in previous ownership.

Just found out today my Rear offside is broken, must have been from about 13,000 miles. That's 2 X Z4M's I've had & both had had this problem! And just been quoted £171.89 (customer contribution) to replace, as it’s 7 weeks out of warrantee.

So, how many is that in total now so far.

BMW Latest position on Broken Springs Claims:

Part of my email to BMW Customer services...

My local dealer (Blue Bell in Crewe) have told me it will cost £171.89 to have my rear springs replaced. This is the 'customer contribution' cost towards a goodwill claim, as the warrantee ran out at the end of March 2011.
I have owned this car since February & have noticed an intermittent rattle since then, but not been able to identify it until now. The broken spring was found at it’s first MOT test yesterday & I have been told it has clearly been like this for quite some time, but not noticed when the car was last inspected.
This is the second Z4M I have owned & the rear springs also broke on that car at 24,500 miles, so I really should have had this car checked whilst still under warrantee, but as it only had under 13,000 miles on the clock in February (15,000 miles now) I thought they would be Ok.
Whilst I appreciate the reduction in the cost to rectify this common fault (see the Z4 Forum Broken springs topic link below) they clearly broke whilst the car was under warrantee & due to the low mileage, I wonder if you could see what you can do for a regular BMW customer?

Reply from BMW...

Thank you for your email dated May 19, 2011, requesting financial assistance towards the repair of the rear springs on your vehicle. I appreciate that this rectification work is unexpected, due to the relatively low mileage of your vehicle and I am sorry for your disappointment.

Although BMW only use quality components in the construction of our vehicle range, we are unable to guarantee that a part will not fail during a vehicle's lifetime. It is for this reason that we offer our customers the opportunity to purchase an Insured Warranty policy once the initial Dealer Warranty has expired.

In the absence of a warranty policy we may occasionally offer customers goodwill to assist with the cost of a repair. When assessing a request, the vehicle age, mileage and service and purchase history are all taken into consideration. We also consider that customers who do purchase a warranty to safeguard themselves in the event of a failure are expected to pay an excess in the event of a claim. If we offered customers who choose not to purchase a warranty the full cost of a repair, this would not be fair on the customers who had purchased a policy. I can confirm that your case has been assessed and we would be unable to offer you any further goodwill.

I acknowledge that you are a loyal customer and it is always concerning to receive correspondence of this nature. However, I apologise that we are unable to conclude this matter in the way you had hoped and I trust that this email clarifies our position. Should you have any further queries please do not hesitate to contact me.

So, there you go quality components!
