Broken Springs - List (add yourself if you've been affected)

Yet another case... OSR, B8's and eibach's arriving today (might regret but will see.. non-runflat's fitted so hopefully an offset to being harsh) plus a good excuse to refresh breaks at the same time, but this is opening up pandora's box and brake pipes are starting to corrode..

Interesting one... mine was in for a new rubber and while the wheels were off I checked for broken springs and this was what I observed....

What do you think has the passenger side been put on upside down or the wrong spring... its in today for an inspection II so going to have it checked and sorted but anyone any ideas? 06 Z4MR

Passenger isnt broken just a shadow.

This is the unbroken one from the pair I just replaced. Cold be the photo angles but neither of yours seem to have tails at each end. Mine is a genuine spring. Hope it's some help.

They are OEM springs, the driver side is correct as far as im aware as I replaced it myself and made sure but the passenger was done before I bought the car and then the driver broke not long after and I swapped. Just wondering if the passenger has been replaced with a front not a rear.

Just a thought Tom, but have you contemplated both sides being broken, losing the bottom tail from the drivers side since you replaced - do you have a picture from when you first installed it? And top and bottom from the passenger side, could potentially correlate with the number of coils and the OEM in Nicks, although you'd certainly have reduced the ride height if that were the case.

Just replaced my second rear spring on my E89 at 34k (first maybe at around 28k), they both broke at the same place the pigtail at the bottom

Had both rear spring replaced some time ago about 74k. Too many speed bumps etc near where I live so expected it. Apart from battery, bulbs tyres and leaky auto box gasket, not bad for nearly 10 years ownership I guess,

Slightly of topic but my wife has a seat ibiza with 30k miles on 65 plate so far 3 broken springs and 2 wheel bearings.
So it aint just our zeds,
Wonder if the seat forum has a topic titled the same :)

I had a Citroen with a broken spring at 35k. Surely it's more a problem with British roads than the BMW build/spring quality?

My E85 had a couple of broken springs at 70k, but it was a 14 year old car so probably a bit late to complain to BMW and I was more bothered by the serious engine problems.

Lol i just discovered this post. Is it too late to add mine? lol. I noticed at 85k miles my stock normal suspension rear springs were cracked near the taper. I replaced them with the Lesjofors non tapered M sport springs. Im not sure how long they were cracked lol. Im sure its been like that for a while now but i didnt really notice. Just wasnt enjoying going over the bumps so i refreshed the entire suspension itself.Original Rear Coil.jpgRear Coil.jpg

Linking my post about how just to buy rears.

One of my Eibachs went just after 7k… the OEM’s lasted 60k… go figure

Front near side spring broke after coming back from a two week holiday. It ate the tyre but now awaiting for parts as I am replacing everything apart from the 37mm washer!

2004 E85 2.2 Just had both rears replaced, mot failure on drivers side. Last done 2009 judging by the mot history. More potholes than tarmac around here :headbang:

Sorry if just a bit off-topic. I've only had my Z4 for 11 months, and was concerned enough that I replaced all four springs with Lesjofors.

What I found when I did the replacement confirmed my choice. I found that both rear springs had worn through the powder coat in the 'pig tail' and were beginning to rust - on my previous 325xi that meant breakage was coming soon. In the front, on the side where one front strut had been replaced, I found that the tech indexed the spring improperly on the strut's lower seat - the spring had been binding and worn off the powder coating. Now I'm just enjoying the drive and hoping those Lesjofors springs outlast the originals.

PS - Lesjofors sells both Sport and non-Sport springs. The rears are 'barreled', but the ends are not tapered.
