Broken spring (pics)...

So my annoying rattle turned out to be a broken spring (no surprise). Here's the piece...

And here's the damage (near-side rear)...

Is this where the break normally occurs? And do I need to fix this promptly or is it still safe to drive in the interim? And is there any chance explaining to BMW that it's an obvious fault - my car's no longer in warranty, although Sytner did replace the off-side rear whilst it was still under warranty last year.

Thanks all, I know this is a well-posted about subject so apologies for any repetition...

:headbang:  :headbang:

So, BMW replaced the 1 spring under warranty but not the pair.

What's the betting now if you were paying that they'd almost certainly advise that you should always cahange suspension components in pairs..

Just food for thought, hope you get it sorted.

Use it as a bluff

Hype,

Break in your pictures is unfortunately the 'normal' break point. I had one replaced during the warrantee period and one a year outside warrantee. Took it to the dealers to get it fixed and they contacted BMW who agreed the replacement out of warrantee. :)

As for safe driving - any defect which could/can potentially have an effect on a vehicle or could be seen as a contributory factor in the event of an incident could impact on your liability and how you insurance company react to a claim. Get it fixed a.s.a.p. and don't take the risk.

Absolutely 100% agree with everything Alan has said. You need to get it replaced before you drive it again. I drove mine to the dealer, and that was it. Luckily my dealer was 1 mile away.

Sorry to see that, but thank you for sharing this. I'm sure you are not the only one... I'll have to check my springs to this weekend as I'm having doubts that the hardness of the ride is only related to those lovely rft's...

Free lowering kit as standard hahaha... This happened to my old E36 but like others have said, it's pretty cheap to sort out.

Looking at that picture it really is a disgrace how those OEM coil springs rust and then break. :o No wonder most people choose an alternative supplier when replacing.

True. A lot of people swap to Eibachs, who make the OEM springs... :?

Price aside I'd go to Sytner for advice.

On handover today I did ask about such problems and they said they recommend the springs be replaced in pairs...might be worth finding out why it wasn't!

Probably because BMW were paying.

Thanks all. Phoned Sytner who told me it was unlikely BMW would pay or even contribute - but they did at least offer to find out for me. Do you think there'd be any point in contacting BMW UK myself? And what sort of price for Eibachs all round instead?

Yeah the stealers agreed to replace one of mine out of warranty but not both

And mine... under 4 years old and under 20k miles.. modial replaced just the one side.

Found one broken when painted my calipers so changed them all to eibach!
