Broken Spring?? How to tell?? (2007 Coupe)

I'm getting a loud rattling which has just started, coming from the boot area, on the driver's side. It's a metallic rattling, very noisy.

Does this sound like a broken spring potentially?

Does it affect the facelifts?

Is there a revised spring that the dealer can fit?

How do I tell if the spring is broken? I haven't got a jack or anything to take the wheel off.

Hmm, mine didn't rattle at all, though I guess it could if a bit snapped off and rested somewhere... Mine started as a nasty squeek, which disappeared when the thing broke, them the car sat a little lower on the drivers side (though the nearside had been fitted upside down, which made it sit high that side anyway!)

I'd get it to your Indy/stealer asap and get them to check it out.

Mine made no noise or any difference to ride height and the car drove OK luckily i had my inspection 1 thats when it was discovered if you run your hand over the rear spring you will feel if it has snapped.

Do remember a creaking sound when i got in my car a few weeks before finding it had snapped that must have been when it went or had already gone but other than that no noise.

When you check if you find it has gone try not to use the car as they can snap and parts go into the alloy wheel makes a mess of the wheel.

I have a squeak on mine at the moment - but not sure if it's gone or just noisy. I think I'll try running my hand around the spring and see if I can feel anything on it. Seems to drive fine :\

Mine made a noise like a loose bolt rattling about over my right shoulder.
I could feel through the wheel and the bottom of the spring was broke, which was the part that sounded like a bolt rattling.

have bmw done anything to fix this, i have a 2009 coupe

no chance of them sorting this issue now, combination of runflats, low profiles and stiff suspension all factors as well as corrosion of the spring of course.

I see from your sig. that you have 108's. I just got a torch and looked through the spokes. Was very clear there was a problem. Rattle was caused by the spring going at the lower end. The piece that was snapped off wa trapped and was freely moving within the remaining spring. I could pretty much reach the spring and feel my way down it. Anything lose suggests a snap. A crack in the spring would be a little harder to feel though. May get your hands/arm a little dirty though, depending on how clear the wheel arches are!

Thanks everyone.

eyup, I shall try sticking my hand in there in a minute, to see if I can feel anything in there!

Thanks eyup! I just stuck my hand in there, and I can feel a loose part in there. I can't quite get it out, but it's definitely broken!

Now, to convince the dealers I can have a car on Tuesday... I can't be without a car, but don't want to risk driving mine!

Even worse, I have TWO of the best Pistonheads meets coming up next Sunday and the following Sunday. Both of which I will now miss.
