Broken Outside Door Handles

Hi Guys

Last week the passenger side window regulator snapped, so I ordered a new one from eBay and fitted it yesterday. It all went fine and I thought there were no other issues.

I went to get into it 2 hours later and both drivers and passengers side door handles have stopped working from the outside and I cannot get into it. I have no idea if these two issues are related, but I haven't touched a thing on the drivers side.

I can hear the locks disengaging when I press the remote, and I can also hear the lock turning when I put the key into the door and turn it manually and the boot opens fine both ways as well.

I had a similar thing happen last summer when I went to Goodwood and it was parked all day in the sun at 35 degrees, but this only happened to the driver side and after it cooled down I could get in fine and it has never happened since.

Now it seems like it has happened to both sides at the same time and I am stuck! I have tried poking a coat hanger through the window, but it isn't strong enough to pull the inside handle. I've also tried removing the roof tray in the boot and climbing through, but that hasn't worked yet.

If anyone else has any other ideas, that would be greatly appreciated, TIA :)

If you press and hold the open part of the key or hold the lock in the keyhole in the open position do the windows drop?

No, that doesn't work unfortunately, my car is a pre-lci 2004 so does not have comfort access, folding roof with the key etc.

Sorry sir, you are 100% correct :D

Before I just didn't hold the key to unlock long enough, if you turn it for around 15 seconds it makes both windows go down. From there I could reach in and pull the handles from the inside, this made the outside handles both work instantly.

I have zero idea why this has happened, maybe a sensor/relay issue? For now, I am happy enough not to be locked outside the car :)

Good work fella!

I’d say it’s probably stretched Bowden cables- plenty of guides on here how to fix!
