Broken oil filter cage.

So I’ve just remover the oil filter cap and the cage that sits in the filter has 4 clips that connect to the cap and they have all snapped off leaving the cage and filter in the engine.

Now I literally can’t pull them out, they seem to be in that tight that no amount of force is allowing them to come free.

Is this normal??
 
You have the m54 engine?

Obviously its not normal.
Is everything maybe compacted with sediment/black crust?
Or any chance that someone fit a wrong oil filter in the past?

The cage is only there to prevent the filter from collapsing, it doesnt hold it in.

Is it only the cage that is stuck in the filter or also the center pin?

The center pin (partly) functions as a plug, that if pulled (with the cap and all) it opens a clearing to the sump, draining the oil filter housing so that you dont have to pull the filter out of a beaker full of oil.
 
Yep M54, and yup cage and centre pin. This is first filter change I have done on it so not sure what has happened previously.
 
Ok, if the centerpin is stuck in the hole that might be a different problem.
Maybe the O rings have degraded due to heat or time and got stuck between pin and housing.

BTW I have a feeling that the description in the picture (I got that from the internet) is not 100% correct.
I think passage 3 into 4 is an overflow/bypass that acts as a safety when the oil filter clogs up/impacts and doesnt let any oil through anymore.
The passage to the sump is shielded afaik by the bottom o ring on the pin.
But that on a side note :wink:

Anyway you have to get that pin out. Maybe turning and wiggle it carefully?

IF the tabs are broken off, try and get them out of the filterhousing before you pull the pin out. If you can find them
Otherwise they might end up in the sump.
I recon your filterhousing is still full of oil?
