Broken Glovebox

Since i've had the car my glovebox has always been on the stiff side. If I pop the latch it would drop maybe an inch and stop, I'd have to push it down the rest of the way. It wouldn't slowly open under its own weight, which is how I believe they are supposed to be.

The last couple of times i've opened it the plastic clip - that attaches the damper to the lid - has popped off, meaning the glovebox just drops as there is no damping. I can get the clip back in but it keeps popping back off every time I open it and try to 'assist' it dropping. I imagine I've weakened the clip by constantly forcing the lid down.

Is this something anyone else is familiar with?

Is the over-damping a common issue and would replacing the damper solve my problem?

Not really a huge issue but slightly annoying and I'm a bit OCD about everything working properly!

Mine did this the other day... Think I bust a clip when I removed the glovebox once. I'd be interested if anyone has a fix, though I suspect it will require a new part :(

Bing, I managed to fix mine today by replacing the damper. I also replaced the clip for good measure and glove box is lovely and smooth, opens by itself and closes much better now as well. Cheap and easy fix.

Part Nos: 51168224806 & 51167112135.
Cost about £15 all together from the stealers.

You will need to remove the glove box surround from the dash to be able to release the old damper. Its very easy though, just open and fully release the glove box then remove the 6 obvious screws and the whole assembly comes straight out.

Took me less than 15 mins.
