Broken Glass

Hi guys, just picked up my first Z4, a 2007 3.0si coupe and have been enjoying it all week. Except for a strange noise every time I corner fast, like bean bag beans rolling around just behind me. I'm not the kind of person who could put up with that so started to dismantle the boot yesterday and found some glass fragments in the base of the boot. On further inspection there were fragments of glass everywhere.

In particular the glass was in the rubber trim at the edge of the boot space and even on the roller for the luggage cover, mainly obvious at the edges.

When I realised it was in the luggage cover I gave up for the day, phoned the dealer where I got it and organised to take it back. My problem is I want it fixed right and if it means doing it myself I would rather do that. Does anyone know what I will find underneath the roller mechanism. The noise seems to be below and behind me when driving so although there are fragments of glass on the roller I'm guessing theres a ton more underneath it. I've had a look at the forums, obviously here first :D , but couldn't find any pictures or guides to dismantling this area completely.

FIxed. Finally got a bit of time and dismantled, well everything.

It was the actual luggage cover that had the glass in it. Wish I had known that at the start, although I would have had to still take a fair bit off to get to it. Even better is that I think I got everything back the way it came, minus the glass.

Good to see you have sorted the problem. :)
I found it hard enough taking both side trim/carpet panels off never mind the rest.

Should have done a step by step guide :)

I thought about trying a step by step guide. It might have helped when I went to put everything back together. The reason I didn't is mainly that I wasn't sure if it would be of any use to anybody. Also I was removing the trim from the cabin side at the same time to see if I could find the problem that way. It got a bit complicated! On the upside I cleanef and hoovered as I went so the cabin is super clean.

That is a very good effort. I took about half the boot trim out to find the bluetooth module to get the pairing passcode, that was bad enough
