Broken Ashtray

The lid for the ashtray only opens half way and dosn't always close properly. I believe this is a fairly common problem and i have done a search on it, however i didnt manage to find anything useful.

Is there anything I could do to fix it without going to a dealer? The previous owner of the car told me that there is 30p stuck behind the lid somewhere but I cant see anything.

Any help would be great, thanks.

Sounds like a coin stuck and preventing it opening. Take it out if you can get to the single retiaing screw holding it in - then you can turn it upside down and hopefully get the coins out. I bet if you told the guy to fix it before you bought it would be fine now.....

If you can push the lid towards the front of the car, GENTLY, and then remove the inner ashtray which should lift out. It will be difficult because the lid wont fully open. Just be careful and gently force the lid open and remove the inner tray. The screw is under the inner tray. Take out screw and lift the whole ash tray out, remember to disconnect the electrical connectors. Mine would not open and found a 1 pence stuck in the cog mechanism. Removed 1 pence and refitted, works perfect.

Be careful Jimmy......I broke the hinges on mine and if IRC you can't buy the lid but have to buy the whole ashtray assembly at £100+ :o

I had the same problem with coins slipping through the front of the tray. Do just as ajs advises. I did that, got the coins out and it worked fine. Just don't force anything. :!:

I had this issue, only the lid wouldn't open enough to get the tray out. I used a long cable tie, fed the end in behind the mechanism and fished around for 15-20 minutes and it popped open. After that, cut some felt to cover the top of the tray, stick it along the back side, no more coin issues...
Ashtray "mod"
(you may have seen this, I've been whoring it around recently, such an easy fix)

Just been fishing around with a cable tie for ages and not managed to dislodge anything. There are definately coins down there because I could hear them when I was poking around.

Pawn Sacrifice, where exactly is the mechanism that you say you fed the cable tie into?

I can see two arms at either side of the lid and one offset in the middle of the two (is this where the mechanism is?)

I took this to show you where they were (this is with the little black tub removed), you can't really see the mechanism, but does at least show you the screw you asked about!

That said, I didn't remove that section myself, I just pushed the coins through the little gap in the middle with the cable tie.

The other thing I did, while moving the cable tie around was slowly move the lid back and forth - that eventually dislodged the coin enough for the thing to open fully. Had a few quid stuck in there! Bonus.

Thanks for that pawn S, appreciate you taking the time

I had a go at it again last night and I was at the point of giving up and what do you know, it just popped open. I lifted the whole unit out and there it was the little bastard, 10p stuck fast in the mechanism.

I tell you thats the hardest ive ever had to work for 10p.

Thanks again :)

I have been trying for weeks to free up the ashtray lid .Today i thought i would give it another go this time moving the lid as the same time as fishing with the cable tie. After about 20 mins the lid popped fully open,i then removed the black ashtray hoping to see some coins-none in sight.
After removing the screw and lifting out the unit and disconnecting the wires,i could see the offending 1p coin trapped next to the ratchet wheel that operates the lid.
Thanks to all above for the tips on freeing up the lid.

Exactly the same thing maxman, although im not sure why it seems to always take 20mins to sort, must be standard procedure time although it prob took me 25 :D

Hi there. I have a jammed ashtray lid. There is enough room to remove tray liner and the retaining screw in the tray recess. However, the assembly will still not come out. I don't want to force it for fear of breaking it and am very conscious that the electrics for the hood switch and tyre pressure resets form part of the assembly. Simply put, is there a special technique to remove this so that I can try and fix the jammed lid which from reading on the forum is more than likely a jamed coin. Any advice appreciated. Best wishes....

there is an OEM part available to replace the ashtray by a storing compartment, perhaps someone here has a part # for it?

Just pull hard enough to release the unit from it's resting position, then tilt towards the gaiter as you channel it out between the dash and the console. Tight space but no risk of braking anything. There will be enough wire length for you to move the ashtray assy. sideways to disconnect everything.
