Hi all,

Just wanted to get some advice from my fellow z4 owners.

I have a 2004 z4 and am having a serious battle with BMW over some problems i have.

problem 1 - my strut brace has taken upon itself to sheer completely off - after investigation it seems the bolts or welding points had rusted causing this to happen - BMW conclusion - Not covered under manufacturers warranty

problem 2 - my convertible roof is having excess wear and tear on the drivers side - reason - the mechanism seems to be defective - BMW conclusion - Not covered under warranty because it is classified as trim - for me to investigate, it will cost just under 600quid (which i have been told by the dealer is a waste of money because warranty wont cover it for full repair their conclusion, a new roof for just under 2000quid. - BMW warranty conclusion - Its a grey area whether the mechanism is classified as trim!

i have friends with audis. merc and porsche convertibles of this age that dont have this problem! Whats wrong with my car??

if anybody else has had this problem or can give me any advice on how to deal with BMW - BMW warranty please .............HELP!!!

difficult problem ,bmw is a big company and the are not the most easy when it comes to warranty.

did you buy the car at the dealer you use for repairs and service?

they really should help you out even just a bit.

the age of the car is also a bit of a problem, its over 5 years ,and im not shure if they need to still give you parts or labour for warranty.

i bought it from dick lovett in bristol, but have taken in to sytner chigwell for all my services except the last one, they have been no help and i have tried 2 other dealerships. i kept renewing my warranty coz i thought it would give me piece of mind on these things, didnt think the age of the car would cause a problem :)

from what i know,is the factory warranty limited to one year, :x

i think thats ridiculous but ,fact!

problem with that is ,because object have a used life of a determined time (do you know what i mean?)the should garantuee it for that amount of time.

when they state the warranty is only one year they in fact limit your rights as a consumer and that is against the law,(in holland it is anyway)
there is a certain amount of write off over the years of use ,so the amount of warranty is a percentage of the total costs of repair.

the above is how it should be,but in practice a dealer or importer or factory brushes everything of as no warranty.

do you hava a lawyer, sick him on them and wait.

1. I can't remember how many years our corrosion warranty runs for, but IIRC it's more than 6 which means this should be covered under warranty.

2. What part of the roof is wearing, if it's the main fabric and cant be classified as trim, trim is an aesthetic item which a roof isn't. One member on here had is dipstick end come off which the dealer tried to say was a trim part. It's utter bo**ocks.

I would suggest you check the corrosion warranty and establish in your own mind what is 'trim' then redo battle with the dealer. I can tell you if it were me they would not win.

not good, sorry for this OP, now where are all the people telling me the strut brace wont do a thing??? clearly theirs enough flex in the chassis to cause these to snap so any extra bracing is imo essential, im glad ive had my strutbrace from nearly new, turrets look brand new on my z4m..... i believe the ///M shell was rein-forced to take the extra load placed by the s54, but still, imo the strut brace is insurance :-)

Hi guys,

thanks for the info, i looked into the corrosion warranty and it is 6 years, so when i logged the complaint it was still within this period. i have contacted citizens advice and have also logged a complaint with the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders. I have also spoken to BMW warranty and told them they will be receiving a complaint and that i have been to these people. They still don't seem to bothered about the whole thing.

I have attached a pic of the wear on my roof on my drivers side, the passenger side is like new! I cant seem to get through to them that i dont want to spend £500 getting it taken apart. They should look at it, and see there is a problem. Since they cant change the bits in the mechanism, surely it means they should just replace it completely, at their cost.

cheers,

if you guys have any tips on how to deal with BMW, it would be greatly appreciated. Send letters to BMW headquarters?

Suggest the strut brace broke due to Run Flats having no shock absorbsion ... Looks like you cd get the bracket welded which shdnt c ost too much

You're not alone.

In Germany a few cars are known with this problem:

I recommend every Z4-driver to have a look to the strutmount each inspection-interval.
