Breaking with engine - oil temp problem?

Hello everyone:)

I'm having a strange problem wih my m54b30 engine. When driving down the hill, breaking with engine (with rpm of 3000-4500), oil temperature drops. It's not much (indicators dial moves about 3 mm left), but still. When I stop breaking with engine, everything backs to normal. Driving fast on normal road, with high rpm doesn't cause this oil temp drop.

Anyone?

Would certainly be more concerned if it went up.

Perhaps the fact that the engine is:

-not receiving a full charge of fuel (assuming your foot is off the accelerator)to maintain detonation temperature (i.e. when the sparks ignite the fuel)
-you are in Switzerland and it's winter
-combined with the additional chill factor caused by moving through cool air

.........ALL combine to produce a significant cooling effect.

Don't believe it's an actual oil temperature change, how could oil temp. go down that quick and back up again in a matter of seconds.

It's more likely and electrical problem, some instrument panels have a built in voltage reglator(not sure about the Z) obviously to regulate the varying voltage ...maybe this is whats wrong ..do any other gauges go up and down with engine revs. ?

Surely if its a voltage regulator issue this would happen randomly rather than engine breaking downhill..... :!:

Well the engine speed is changing and thus the voltage going to the battery is also changing ...obviously I don't know the actual status of the battery voltage and the charge going into the battery.

I've seen this before and It's relative to engine speed ! If the battery was fully charged and stable..(going by my theory) the gauge should be stable, but I guess that is rarely the case.

Do you really think that oil can change it's temperature that quick ?

It's the only "problem" I have with engine. It occurs in every weather conditions (I was driving up and down on Stelvio Pass when it was about -3 degrees celsius, and on other hills when it was +25.

Fixit Man, You might be correct - because the "oil temp" drops and rises again very fast.

Now, car stays in the garage on summer tires, so I'm not able to make a short movie. When the snow melt down, I'm going to record it.

Funny thing though.

Didn't think non ///M's had an oil temp gauge.

You made me feel like an idiot;)
Of course there's no oil temp gauge.

Engine coolant temp I had on mind :o
