Breakdown recovery which one?

Hi guys

My breakdown recovery expires in a few days, I am on non run flats so I carry two cans of tyre weld and a compressor but obviously I need cover in case of a blowout etc so who do I go with, I have been with Silver Knight from Chris Knott but I have read some bad reviews on this service so any help? The Silver Knight was £59 for the year and it looks on paper to have everything but then someone wrote a scathing review about their service on here although I can't find those comments now, so I am unsure who to use I just want a quality service if I need them and at a decent price, so any advice much appreciated.

Thanks

I went for Aviva, it was less than £100 for me and someone else at this address for personal cover throughout the uk. I didn't think that was bad, normally I used quidco to get the best cover but don't think I could get near that.
I rang them the other day regarding cover and they said it was RAC they actually use so I think its not bad for a joint membership.

Thanks I don't mind paying a bit more so long as if I need it the service is spot on! It's ok promising all these different features but if the service is poor it's not worth it, and you don't know until you need them.

I don't tend to deviate from the AA or the RAC as they seem to have the most coverage and using a cashback site they're no more expensive either.

In the last 2 years I've needed to use them twice and the service has been spot on both times.

Good to know, what is this cashback site would I get it cheaper?

^^ top cash back

To be honest I've used AA, RAC and GreenFlag and all have been very good. RAC was with the gf, AA and greenflag myself (on dad's policy so I go with what he chooses).

The only thing with green flag is you have no idea what company will come out to you as in certain areas they subcontract.

I pay £16 a month to Barclays ( called Additions plus ) - you get RAC cover that includes recovery , homestart etc for myself and wife as individuals - also included is travel insurance , mobile phone insuarance , 12 months additional warranty on unlimited items values over £50 ( used this for new tablet ,laptops , kindles and cooker etc. This is good value provided you use these exrtra benefits ( which we do )

RAC cover means if you or your wife breaks down in any car ( or are being carried as a passenger ) they will come out.As regards service the RAC have been excellent - they came and repaired our 25 year old campervan twice in the past years - once as homestart when they took off the steering wheel to get to the ignition - another time replacing a gasket to stop a water leak ( took 1.5 hrs ) - and atually changed a cambelt ( RAC man said he had one in his van ) on my daughter's old Astra ( and didn't even charge me for the belt )

Yes - if you sign up with TCB (free) you will get a big discount on joining AA, RAC, etc. Then next year you do it again with another breakdown service, and get a big discount again. Will take a few weeks or even months to get your cashback, but will save you £50 or so over the normal price.

Yeah - Quidco or top cashback as both can vary on their rates.
I wouldn't go aside from the bigger names - hence happy that Aviva uses RAC, I think Churchill do also and you can get it cheaper, I don't think I could have got joint personal cover with all the options for less than £100 elsewhere.

For £120 I've just got rac home start and their repair warranty so if I breakdown most items are repaired at a Rac registered garage. And £0 excess.
I had the AA version last year and they replaced my broken rear spring.

I am with the RAC as they cover what you are using, not had to call them out for any of my cars ( Quick touch wood ) but a few years ago recoverd me and my motorbike which had a snapped chain. :)

Hi Peter do you mean they cover whichever car you are driving at the time? Which package is the best one to have as I imagine being recovered back to home is a good one to have if it can't be fixed as I wouldn't want to be stuck at some local garage in the middle of nowhere :)

Another option I use is RAC with your Tesco club points.

Single- Roadside & Recovery £32 Club points
Single- Roadside, Recovery & Home £48 Club points

Damn I don't use Tesco.

Stay the hell away from Silver Knight! Absolutely S**t! Starter went on my Z4C and I asked for home start and a mechanic out to help diagnose the issue. They repeatedly asked if I wanted a tow, from home, when I said no (as the car was safe) they said that if The car was not fixed that night, they could no longer recover me, until I had the car fixed.

Not a problem I replied, please send a mechanic to diagnose the exact problem. We once again went through me explaining to them that I did not need it towed and where would I have it towed to a 21:00 on a Saturday night? Just send a mobile mechanic.

Low loader arrive a few hours later. I tell the guy my suspicions, give him the voltage readings, tell him about the solenoid clicking, he just looks at me and says "You'd know better than me mate. I'm not a mechanic, I just lift 'em and shift 'em. Where do you want to go?" FFS!

As I refused the tow. God knows where they think I wanted it towed to? Probably an "approved garage" I am no longer eligible for rescue.

Ended up using my RAC membership. They turned up in 30 min the next day, in 5 said, no problem dead starter, bump started me and I drive to Euro Car parts, bought a new starter (they even followed me there and back) and stuck around whilst aI fitted it. Top service!

Silver Knight, bunch of cowboys!

For the sake of a few quid a year, why would you mess around with anyone but the top guys - false economy IMHO. RAC or AA for me...

I've been signed up with AutoAid for a few years not (although luckily not had to use them). They are breakdown insurance so you need a credit card with a good limit and then claim back the expenses, they will call out a local breakdown service for you; or allow you to call you're preferred guy if you wish.

They get good reviews on MoneySavingExpert and a few other sites, not your conventional provider but a good solution and super cheap at £46 a year for a policy that covers me and the wife in any car.
