Break disc coating?

I was looking at new discs as I am sure I need them and I was looking at mtec and noticed they do a coating:

What is the point if it comes off straight after use? Is it more to protect the areas the pads don't touch?
 
Just stops the edges and hub section from rusting.
It does start to come off with heat and lifts after time.
IMHO not worth the cost, just use brake caliper high temp paint in red or black.
 
I've got the black coating from Mtec, I cant remember how much extra it was but well worth it I would say.

Ive driven about 7000 miles so far and the coating still looks good on the rest of the disk! :thumbsup:
 
I went for silver mtec brake discs. The coating is still ok on the fronts but on the rears the hubs are rusting. Discs have only been on for 9 months... coupled with this the fronts have warped so much that the steeying wheel wobbles and I can even hear a rattle. Not happy at all, emailed MTEC but got nothing back at all. :x

You sure there warped, i would check your front lower control arm bushes. It got rid of 95% of my vibrations under breaking, I think the rest is down to the groves on the disc mine being brembo max
 
I fitted mtec disc to a few of my old cars without any problems. They did rust,but I painted them before fitting. Good to see they do the coating now. :thumbsup:
 
I havent had any issues with MTECH discs
As jan_tekin says check front bushes or disc/pad build up :thumbsup:
 
Good points. I just figured it was the discs as the vibration only occurs during braking. Also when braking it's very stop start i.e. it's not smooth and is as if there are high and low spots on the discs.
What's the easiest way to check for pad/ disc build up?
 
Usually going thorough a series of breaking will remove any pad build up. I knew my lower control arm bushes failed because my front wheels would move back and forth in the arch also heard a click under light breaking.

I'm having the same problem. At slow speed braking 15-0mph it feels like the discs has high and low points.
I was going to just replace the discs but after reading this, I'm wondering about bushes. It did pass the mot with this issue.

Did you solve this ?

Hi Rob

New Pagid Discs on the front virtually solved the problem but 6 months on and there is still something not right. I think I need new control arm bushes, its perhaps a bit of both. I have new bushes in the garage but just not fitted them, will probably combine with new front shocks.
 
My vibration was solved by replacing the rear discs. My indie advised a change as my bushes were fine. I can't remember why he said it happens, i think it was due to high and low spots that can occur on the tears due them not being worked as hard as the fronts.

Re bed them , 60 mph brake hard to 10 mph a dozen or so times then drive home carefully to let them cool off , but make sure you brake really hard to get them properly smelly hot .
 
Without reposting the above comments 99% of braking vibration issues are due to build up of deposits on pads and nothing to do with warped rotors or similar set up issues. Usually happens on hot discs stopping at lights, islands, etc. with foot on brake pedal, transferring material to the disc.

Run through the rebedding cycle before even thinking about changing discs or other suspension or geometry.

As for the MTEC and other coatings, they are slightly better than no coating, but to make them last long-term you'd really need to paint the top hats in Hammerite or similar
 
Its probably down to the fact that pads are no longer made from asbestos which was a softer material but also had an annoying habit of giving people cancer. New material is harder and accounts for increased disc wear and some glazing
