Brands Hatch 23rd Feb - 1st Trackay in Z4M

Hi All,

Did my 1st TD in my Z4M today at Brands Hatch Indy.

It was an afternoon session, open pit lane and was wet for most of the afternoon with rain at times turning to drizzle, a brief rest bite, then more drizzle/rain. The track never dried out and remained ridiculously slippy all afternoon. I honestly cannot remember Brands being this slippy ever before!

That said despite the stiff set up of my car and OE Conti's that are past their best, it behaved impecably... Yes quite a few oppo lock moments as rears cried "y'er 'avin' a laugh m8!!!" but breakaway was easy enough to gather up.
I managed a good pace all afternoon and towards the end of the day consistently saw 125-128mph at the end of the pit straight.

Am proud to say towards the end of the day when the track was more damp than wet (still v slippy) I was only being passed by race cars on "wets/inters" (was an ARDS day too).

There was a Radical which was stupidly quick given the conditions :o (Respect!)

My Z4M did me proud - It does feel very at home on the track (in some ways more so than on the road) - I got a few comments too on how good it sounded with the throttle wide open 8)
The Stoptech BBK was stunningly effective with fade free powerful retardation, awesome F/R balance and oh so easy to modulate which was so essential in the conditions experienced today (stunning BBK).

Am looking forward to lots more TD's this year :D

Z4M "Rocks"

Awesome. Always fancied flying down the paddock hill. I'll have to get on there later in the year once it warms up :)

Gotta be approaching the first Hampshire run soon surely ;)

well done, brands is one of my favourate/local tracks. It's miles better in the dry and really suits the Z...

Am off to Snett next sunday 6th March and Donnington GP 18th... first stints for 2011 so hopefully should be fun :driving:

New layout of Snett looks fab'... Let me know how you find it compared to the old.

I'd be interested in knowing more about trackday insurance too. I'm yet to do a track day but was looking up insurance the other day, got some quotes for £250 per day which seems really high. I also emailed the contact from trackdays.co.uk but never got a reply.

£250 should provide you with about £25k of cover (with a £2.5k excess) - or it did when I took mine to Oulton and the Nürburgring.

The going rates from MORIS (Everitt Bowles) or REIS (Richard Eggar) seems to be:
  • premium = 1% of insured value
  • excess = 10% of insured value
You can reduce this premium by reducing the cover you take out, but then if there's a write off situation you'll end up massively out of pocket. You can also effectively reduce the excess to £0 by paying for another policy which insures the excess too - although the minimum claim still has to be higher than the 10% excess to invoke it.

I have my car insured with Competition Car Insurance and it allows 5 trackdays a year including 1 european track (excl ring). The policy is an aviva policy and is cheaper than other insurers road only policy.
