Brakes

Hi All I replaced all pads and discs today as MOT is tomorrow , the rear discs were very very worn infact i think they were original from when the car was new! I replaced all including handbrake shoes with textar discs and pagid pads (euro car parts sent textar instead of pagid) I was about to send them back but lookup up textar and it's made by same manufacturer as pagid and textar is oem on Porsche so not bad stuff steel is steel I guess :D took a few hours to do all with the main work getting those damn springs on the handbrake shoes on and off... Everything lubricated and cleaned up and a nice coat of Hammerite silver on all the calipers and extra paint on the discs on the hub part looks nice!

I am thinking about bleeding the brakes to improve deal feel, I believe this was last done 2 years ago what else besides this will bring back the we car feel? Slave cylinder? Master cylinder? Braided steel hoses ( which I think own is braided under rubber) so maybe a waste...

Has anyone ever successfully brought back the new pedal feel using oem parts and if so which parts? A light touch in a new car with no pedal travel is what I am after. Discs and pads have never made a difference in actual travel....

While I had the rear wheels off I undid the arch covers where you can access the drain holes, followed ship killers guide and pulled the plugs! Christ after sticking my finger in there and a bit of pressure with hosepipe a load of black sludge came out! Afterwards I put hosepipe in the roof area and let the water run clear. I cleaned out the rubber bungs but not sure they are needed? Seems they cause the blockage? I may pull them out and leave out...

I've just done mine and thought it all felt very wooly, however I followed the Stoptech braking in procedure and the brakes feel fantastic now.

Basically its get the discs warm by normal driving for about 5 minutes then accelerate up to 60mph and slam the brakes on till you reach about 10 mph, do this 10 times. You will start to feel brake fade at about the 7th or 8th stop dont bottle it. You will get loads of smoke and smell, the discs should get a blue tinge to them as well but it will transfer pad material onto the disc which is exactly what you want.

Remember quite lane for this and dont stop completely

I would recommend you doing this before the MOT and giving your car enough time for the brakes and fluid to cool down. I know it sounds extreme but Stoptech reccomend this even when you renew pads especially front ones. I fitted Mtech grooved discs and I litterally stop like this :headbang: :headbang: now

when you do the brakes do you need to get any wear indicators etc reset.

only if the sensor has been activated on the dash as its an indicator that the pads are worn down.. if your carefull then you can just change the pads and disks.

+1 for the Textar pads and discs (I had the E-pad high ceramic low-dust type) and used the bedding in routine scousefly suggests. With about 1k on them now they are feeling good, with sufficient bite when cold and capable of repeated high speed pull-downs per original spec really

Thanks guys, I'll give it a try and find some back roads and so some stop until brake fade occurs  ... all the work I did passed but MOT failed on rusty rear brake lines and play in the ball joints up front. Looking at my service history I have had the bushes done before but never the actual wishbone/ball joints so the car should feel nice after doing this as it now has 86k on the clock! Might go for what CJ has done with the Meyle HD stuff, I also have some poly powerflex bushings that I never got round to putting on so might have a go at popping those in on the ends. As for the brake lines I will get the indie garage to sort as it looks like a big job with lots to remove. :headbang:

About the rubber drain bungs. I don't think leaving them off is a problem for many people. It will minimise obstructions building up. You would be better served though by preventing debris from getting in the drains in the first place. The drains are open to the passenger compartment though, so you may get a bit more tyre noise with the roof closed. I am concerned also with insects and spiders accessing the passenger area via the drains, the bungs serve to deter them. Not everyone has insect threats, but if you do, I'd leave them in place.

I've got some nice shiny HEL brake lines to fit, hopefully this weekend, I'll let you know if it is difficult to fit.

excellent, I have been quoted 180 for lines and fitting for the front to rear, its booked in for wednesday, I had a look in my dads pit and there seems a huge amount of stuff to take off to access the whole run.

btw... after the bedding in over the brakes as per above they are bite very nice now! Just need to get rid of that bit of pedal travel before bite.
