Brakes....

My 2.5i has solid rear discs. Can I have OEM vented discs without modifying the calipers? But I think the thickness of solid disc may be thinner vented discs. Are the rear brakes apart from discs same as the ones on 2.5si?

the ebc discs are solid rears too, vented front

I went with Pagid RS29 pads, Goodridge steel brake lines and Castrol SRF brake fluid. Cold, the car squeaks and breaks like I'm used to, but when at temperature the stopping power is improved. Since the Pagids are endurance pads, they should keep their braking power better when under stress, and lower the chance of fading.

Just incase anybody is still watching this forum:

I have not ordered any Brakes as of yet but it is getting close. These are the best prices I can find at the moment. Would be interested to know if anybody has seen any better deals.
I'm not going for the Big Upgrade, just Discs and Pads. I will be going on a little Tour around France and the Alps in the summer so want to ensure everything is in good order.
Ultimax Discs and Green Stuff Pads - I will possibly consider a "replacement" set of Red Pads if I get on the Track again.

I'll be receiving my new front calipers to do the SI upgrade, so thinking about pads and discs. I think i'd like to go for sloted discs like the M. Anyone recommend a good one?

P.S. I don't track my car, so spirited driving at the most.

Can't really recommend slotted discs, but IMO if your just doing spirited driving (and even some track usage) you can get away with plain vented discs. But then again if you want the looks and less pad life (I'm not sure how much less) then you can go slotted.

EBC Ultimax are what I fitted. Added their greenstuff pads too for low dust.
Through the wheel look with 108's was important factor in the choice
Beware that slotted rotors even when claimed to be silent can drone under certain braking pressures/speed combinations

If only you were a motorsport marshal - you'd have been eligible for a 50% discount from EBC.

I've been meaning to PM you about that. The marshalling not the discount. Sounds fun.

If you want to do any events next year then you can start by attending one of the training events that are held in Jan/Feb. Details should be on the volunteers in motorsport site or the British motorsport marshal's site.

However you can't take advantage of any of their discounts until you get your MSA registration/licence card - although you can still attend events.

In all honesty though. If you are only going to use your car for the road, is there any need in upgrading at all ???

The reason for asking is I have just had a text from a BMW dealership that has recommended that i change the pads on my car. I wont be touching a track so should I stick with the OEM option ???

A quick responce would be good as I have to phone them back in the next hour.

Cheers

Matt

OEM produces A LOT of brake dust plus If you let BMW do it then it'll actually work out more expensive.IIRC £140 just to change the front pads.

last time i got my mechanic to change front discs and pads with sensor (all OEM from eurocarparts) and it cost me around £150/£160 all in.

I just did my front discs and pads myself. ATE pads (oem) and Pagid discs, both from Euro carparts. Shade over £100....job done

Cheers Both

Just got a call back and was told there is about 1000 miles of meat left on them. Checking out Euro Carparts in the New Year seems like a plan to me

What Peddy said, you can get some OEM equivalent that produce like no dust (even with hard braking) for cheap. BMW will charge way too much to do the brakes. The brakes are one of the simplest out there so don't let a garage charge more because it's a BMW. Whatever stigma bmw did back in the day does not apply on z4's (well up to the new one-not sure about it)

Advice taken. Im going to purchase away from BMW and fit them myself. Makes me wonder now whether I should have taken it in for the brake fliud change now (though prob worth it to keep the service book as FBMWSH)

I dont get this, they stamp a brake fluid change?

They tried to get me to do mine when it was in the other day - I said I would get it done by a family mechanic as its not a service book item - they couldn't argue :)

it's part of the time-based maintenance. check your service book. should be done every 2 years.
