Brakes

your pictures are very similar to how my discs look, and mine are shot and being replaced this week (havent been able to go without the car this month but im on holiday next week). i think mine are the originals, 76k miles on the clock. mine are very corroded on the edges, always rust up on the surface when any water comes in contact with them.

why is the outer edges important? they don't touch the pad? the edges are quite rough and bumpy (is that what you mean by a 'lip') and i can easily peel the rust off (well something is peeling off... i'm guessing it's the rust) on the edge and width of the discs.

Because in the photos of the front discs it is clear that this 'rusty edge' has grown 'inwards', permanently corroding and making unusable a bit of the friction area. The existing pads have moulded to this.. You don't need to replace discs each time you replace pads, but I suspect these discs have been on for a fair few years - since new maybe. New front pads would not work effectively either.

i have to agree with the others, change discs and pads & sensor. im in the same boat, bought the parts and having a local garage do the work and change the brake fluid at the same time. at least when you change it all you know its been done, and next time it should only be the pads to change unless there is a large (more than a couple of mm) lip. new discs are completely flat to the edge.
