Brake Tell Tale Light On

So...

I was driving on the motorway the other day in stop start traffic and the brake tell tale light illuminated. There was no previous warning of brake pad wear... ie.. squealing from the brakes...etc.

So anyway the light is pretty much continuous, although the odd time if I'm in traffic and pressing the brake pedal for a long(ish) time the light will extinguish but then will illuminate again as soon as I set off. Is this normal?? Or could it be a dodgy pad sensor or wire??

The sensors usually come on early. A quick inspection should confirm.
Check brake fluid!
