Brake Squeal

Hi All

Apologies if this has been covered before - searched the forum but couldn't find any relevant posts.

We just traded our lovely Sdrive 20i for a lovely M40i. One of the issues that our previous dealer never managed to resolve with the 20i was occasional brake squeal. It would appear to be an issue on the M40i too, though it didn't occur on the test drives.

We pinged the dealer who explained it was a "feature" of M-performance brakes....hmmm... :( ...which may be the case but it has never occurred on my 430i (with the M-performance package).

Any thought welcome - any ideas for a safe fix even more welcome.

Thanks in anticipation

Go give them a good bedding in... 10 stops in quick succession from 60mph to 10mph, then a 10 minute drive with no braking to let them cool off again.

Cheers Brillomaster - I'll take it for a spin tomorrow and try that. I ought to have said, it isn't brand new, but it has been very lightly used which might be part of the problem.

I'll report back!

I am sure there is a SIB for sport brake noise. Carefully file the pad edges all around, clean and lube pad bearing surface and reinstall.

Might be worth looking to see if there is any evidence of the pads being lubed.

It could be your brand of replacement pads. I've recently heard from a mechanic friend that brembo brake pads are notorious 'squeelers'. Typical me, I wish he'd told me that before I brought them and fitted them

Mine does when cold and just reversing out the garage, after that not usually an issue

[ref]bleatoid[/ref], Is it this?

Thanks for all the helpful hints, ideas and suggestions - looks like it was a dirt / bedding in issue - took it for a decent drive with some moderately firm braking and we're all good. Still a bit of squeaking when coming out of the garage cold as others have noted, but nothing like as bad as when it was delivered. It is 2 years old with just 9k miles on it and absolutely immaculate - privately owned too - so probably very gently driven.
Still has original pads so not a replacement pads issue and not the stone problem.

Happy days. Thanks again folks - really appreciate you taking the time.

(Gorgeous things aren't they?) :D

Brake squeal on M Performance brakes is common due to their aggressive pad compounds. A proper bedding-in procedure, cleaning, and applying high-temp grease can help. Switching to lower-dust pads like EBC Redstuff or using anti-squeal shims may also reduce noise. If the pads or rotors are glazed, light sanding or replacement might be needed.

Hi Guthlac - yep - seems to be the case, though I've never heard a pip from the brakes on my 430i which has the M Performance Pack. I assume they're the same rotors / callipers / pad compounds as the equivalent items on the M40i? Maybe not.

Anyhoo - all sorted.

Appreciate the info.
