Brake squeal & thump...

Correct regarding the handbrake, there are small shoes, a little like old school drum brakes.

Bing you are homing in on the brakes, but don't rule out bushes etc. might expaling the 'thump' i.e. there may be some movement somewhere.

TrickyDicky, that's why I said it could be anything - I had to have both front discs and pads replaced 16k miles ago because a seriously worn bush was causing everything to be out of kilter under braking at speed... Which fecked the brake parts. Like I said, I'll do a wiggle test... Trouble is I have no idea what I'm doing beyond that

Plan is spend some time on job hunting and rugby, cut grass, wiggle wheels - though to be honest with the weather today I am close to just dumping everything and going out for a hoon 8)

... what time?

Not decided either way yet - just about to cut the grass and hang out the washing, then inhale lunch. At that point there will be sufficient evidence of me having not wasted the day to (perhaps) slope off for a bit. Will need to be back by 3pm to do the school run. I will keep you posted

Mr RJS-Z4 just left after giving up 5 hours of his Saturday for me - new Textar ePads on all four corners, rear discs cleaned up everything peachy. No squeal, thump or bump, reckon it must've been a loose pad - on the rear, despite my being convinced it was the front. Just need to get up nice and early tomorrow to find some quiet roads to bed them in properly...

I did find a nail in my rear tyre though, so that needs plugged, and the car is in the shop on Wednesday because a locking wheel nut has sheared on the rear... Might be able to re-tap it looking at it, but it could be a whole new hub

Anyway, big thanks to Rob - thoroughly decent of him, and the Forum comes through again

One thing as silly as it sounds is to be sure its the fronts. Due to the driving position in the zed you're actually a lot closer to the rear wheels and alot further from the front wheels then you sometimes think. I spent ages searching for what i thought might be a pin or nail stuck in my front tyre only to find it was a small stone embedded in the tread of the rear one.

:)

Good to hear it's all sorted mate.

Nobody loves a smart arse Ste :P

But yeah all sorted - and next time I'll be able to do it myself. Probably :D

If it need re taping its m12 1.5mm pitch I can lend you the tools if needed.

Glad it's all sorted  it's a nice forum us all helping each other out :D

MM, generous to a fault, as ever

However I am very much a monkey and would never trust myself to do it

Glad to help mate, really hope that re tap works as the problem was only about 2 threads deep and it looks like the bolt took most of the punishment. Hopefully leaving the thread more intact that it may have been.

If it's a new hub I do feel for you.

Thanks again to mrs bing for the frankly amazing food, and nice to meet you.

As for the knock, if I had to guess at the root cause I'd say rear pads, they were a poor brand and so the fit could have left something to be desired.

Hopefully you have many happy motoring hours ahead of you now!

Cheers again Mr RJS - I got a decent lunch cos you were here :D

I shall be getting up early doors to go bed them in, carefully

MM - locking wheel nut, machined by the chap that supplied my spacers, probably about 3mm too short. Got cross-threaded and the first couple of threads on the bolt are smooth. Looks to have only affected the very beginning of the thread in the hub such that a new bolt won't catch the thread. The inner thread looks fine. RJS reckons a careful re-tap might sort out the beginning of the thread and fix it. It's booked into my Indy on Weds first thing to have it sorted. Hopefully not a new hub, as it is a rear and therefore a significant component. I have no idea how much a new one costs, but he described it as 'quite dear' which is mechanic speak for eye-watering

So, I am going to ask them to try and re-tap it first. Tbh, they know what they are doing so if it CAN be saved then they'll manage it. Given I cross-threaded the bolt in the first place, I could end up screwing up something that's perfectly salvageable.

It sounds like it could be saved. But trust the Indy if they say no believe them. Still if they don't have a tap let me know and I will post you one. Shame your not close to Oxford I would happily take a look tomorrow for you!

Cheers MM - bit of a trek for me, but appreciated

I'm sure they have the tools, and I trust them so all will be well whichever way it goes.

Brakes carefully and progressively bedded in this morning - gotta love that new brake smokin' smell :D

They're very good indeed

Happy-ending / bullet-dodge today - took the car in fearing the worst, just picked it up and... No new hub needed, they managed to re-tap the thread, and did the other 4 while they were at it :yeah:

£50 cash - which I didn't have on me so am dropping round tomorrow. Much better result than the £300 it would have cost me to have a new hub supplied / fitted.

Note to self - pay more attention when changing the wheels next time
