Brake Screech/noise

Sometimes when I brake at the lights I can hear a screeching sound as if the pads are done. I am told if that was the case the light would come on. Any ideas what this could be?
 
I would visually check your brakes.
Electrics can go wrong, maybe the sensor is faulty.
Our Mini has recently had the rear brake pad warning light come on, there is about 5mm of pad material left and the garage switched off the light and told me to visually check the pads as the light will now not come on.
Maybe the same thing has been done to your car.
 
i know when mines ready for a change, was looking at

brembo, (maybe grooved ones) and ferrodo dsc2500 pads.

but i know on old car these actually do make a screech when cold
