Brake problem Roadside DIY fixit

Yesterday after 20 or so miles driving to see SWMBO. I noticed the car was slowing down more than usual when coasting as I do occasionally. I pulled over and saw the front drivers side caliper smoking, with the smell of burnt pads. No breakdown cover as SWMBO is arranging as Valentines pressie.
Decided to return home and pulled into A3 layby to wait for caliper to cool down after a couple of miles. At this stage I thought ' This is going to take a long time at this rate. Found a discarded Costa cup and started to hoik some ditch water onto the disc to 1: cool it down a bit and to see how hot it was, and 2: for my own amusement seeing the steam come off and all of the hissing etc.
It was when after about 5mins of doing this with the disc still quite hot I decided to drive it a bit more and realised the disc was free to rotate and I had inadvertantly fixed the problem temporarily to get me home by shrinking the disc by cooling it.
Back home in time for Tea, Medals and plenty of self back slapping.
Thought l'd share this as it may come in handy to someone else who is bozo enough to not have any cover like me.

Think it's more likely you freed up the piston.
Possibly, I made sure that I didn't use the brake pedal hardly, by using engine braking. That disc was mega hot though. I just have to find out if there was anything stopping the piston returning, as debris causes them to seize by my research.
