Brake Pipes & System Refurbishment

HEL pipes now fitted to rear of my Z. Just one high quality braided hose on each side instead of the original two (well, three if you count the two part pipe leading to the caliper!). Straightforward fit, although I did have to cut an access slot into the bracket behind the hub. I've attached some photos in case they help anybody else in the future.

As well as a pair of Front Hoses, I've just ordered a pair of custom rear hoses to the following specification:
Fitting 1: Swivel Female Circlip Fitting M10 x 1.00 - Straight
Fitting 2: Male Swivel Nut M10 x 1.00 - Straight
Support 1: Bobbin Grommet
Hose Colour: Clear
Length: 720mm (length of Hose excluding Fittings)
Quantity: 2

Hopefully these should do the trick! HEL had no idea what Support 2: Circlip Small Nut was all about.
The Schematics showed no reason for a second support either so I omitted that one.

Pics to follow :)

Interesting - my second photo shows the circlip in question which I ordered and which was supplied. Perhaps this has been deleted on later models - mine is a 2003 2.5

Ahhh, right, I get it now.

Nobodie's pictures actually show the bobbin grommet, so I was thinking that this was the rubber thing in your second picture and it turns out that rubber thing has a stupid name which doesn't mean what it actually is. A Circlip is a metal thing. Not a rubber fitting!

I now see that the bobbin grommet thing is hidden inside the plastic clip housing thing on top of the trailing arm.

I'll call my supplier in the morning. Hopefully he won't have made my hoses up yet, otherwise I'm buying a second set!

Managed to get through to my supplier in time luckily!

They've made the hoses up for me this morning and sent a picture through:

I'm hoping this image and the above should help anyone making the same mistake that I did when ordering due to not being able to see the Bobbin Grommet. Also known as a Motorcycle Grommet by my supplier.

They look right when compared to mine. You will need one more HEL pipe clip as those hoses need 3 each.

That was my error so they sent me some more later

Yep, I ordered six, but he's only got Five in stock at the moment. The last one will be with them by the time the front hoses arrive!

That should work out well the, assuming you have more ordered for the front too.

I've now received my custom brake hoses:

I'll get some pics as these go on the car, which will hopefully be some point next week and will be deciding on what brake fluid to use over the next few days too! :)

A bit more info for anyone using this thread as a guide...

The overall length of the hose was slightly too long, and had to have a couple of cable ties installed to stop the hose slipping through the two rubber fittings into it's most comfortable position which left it slightly closer to a few things than I would have liked it to. With an overall length of 700mm, rather than 720mm.

With regards the 'small circlip nut', Had this mount been installed the opposite way round on the hose, it'd have slipped straight through bracket along with the fitting for the caliper, however as it was the wrong way round, this bracket had to be cut to allow the hose to pass through...

This diagram is how I believe they would be best laid out...

If I'd run the oem route exactly from the caliper and back up towards the 'hoop' , the hoop would have been too big and the line would have 'dragged' a little against the rear trailing arm. To relieve this, I had to pull some through the 'bobbin' so the excess was between the bobbin and the circlip nut fittings rather than at the axle.

It's good enough as it is, but it definitely would have been better 20mm shorter for me.
That and my hoses measured 600mm end to end...

Perhaps the 3.0si with the 294mm rear disk setup has a slightly different rear-most pipe?

Maybe pre/post facelift or 3.0i vs 3.0Si, but am surprised 2cm makes any difference over that length.
Either way a lot better that oem with all those bit of hose, pipe and connectors :)

Yeah, absolutely. Don't get me wrong, they fit fine, but if a novice was doing it, the loop at the top end would gently rub under suspension movement. Only on the fuel line side though :)

Update on this and thanks to those who provided information.

Went with HEL braided hoses, roll of conifer tubing, bag of connectors and a litre of DOT4. Added in a top end Sykes Pickavant flaring kit and hand held pipe bender and all it then needed was a day's work..

Front hoses straight forward enough, just needed to do a quick change between fluid drips

Rear was a little more tricky working around the fuel tank, crafting shaped pipes and splicing in mid way along the car. Had 700mm HEL hoses on the rear thus eliminating the mix of 2 hoses and a short pipe run on each side.

Tip - I used the defunct fume pipe that runs across the car and simply threaded the left to right brake pipe inside it. That eliminated issues of getting access to the clamps to fix the new pipe.

Way too oily to take pictures doing this, but have one

EDIT - 1 picture of the handiwork where the 2 new pipes come around the fuel tank. RHS crosses the car. LHS does a 180 turn into the new hose.

What is the fume pipe you are referring to? Cannot find any info on what/where it is? I'm looking at replacing my brake lines. Thanks

It's a hard plastic tube that runs from the vapour filter in the rear rhs wing, runs across the chassis on the same line as the brake pipe, then follws the trans. tunnel to the engine.
I'd removed filt r and plugged the pipe so the rear section provided an easy route to tread a brake pipes through

Sorry to bump an old thread - but why are you using 6x circlip fittings? I only see one fitting in the middle that needs one?

Also, at the brake-pipe end you've gone for a circlip fitting - is there one there out of the factory?
