Brake pipes - common Z4 issue?

Hi all,

Ive just been reading another thread (Z4 for sale) and not wanting to hi-jack it I thought I would start a new one about a question it raised....

The owner said in his classified that "Replaced brake pipes all round (£££ and a common Z4 issue now sorted)"

How common is it and what age/mileage do they tend to go at?

I bought mine from a BM dealer with AUC when the car was 5 years old with 50k on clock

Took it to an indy for an inspection and they said the rear pipes were corroded

BM replaced them under warranty
 
i think though you can prevent the MOT rear brake pipe corrosion problem but cleaning up the pipes prior MOT.... mine had surface rust a wire brush and some oil would have prob done the trick but it is still hard to tell unless you have a nice car lift and room to inspect everything. As in other posts you need to have a good look to figure out if its dirt and surface rust or if they are actually very corroded.

03 with 90k and the same. Although had the advisory for a couple of tests now.
 
Most cars start to suffer with corroded rear brake pipes after a few years. All the salt and crap is thrown on them, but no heat from the engine to dry them out.

Don't think the Z4 is any better or worse than other cars.
 
I was chatting to my usual tester who said that surface corrosion is as an advisory, even if it's capable of being quite literally wiped off but they aren't allowed to clean it at all to examine it further. So since most pipes over 3 years old will have some surface corrosion they have to fail it if they think it affects the integrity of the pipe, or almost certainly give an advisory. To his credit he's issued a brake pipe advisory on one of my cars three years running but insists they don't need replacing! I reckon yg54sg (above) is right suggesting that giving visible pipes a rub and a bit of something to coat them will avoid problems.
 
Thanks for the replies, will be something I will keep any eye on prior to MOTs.

Would also like to know the costs if anyone has replaced?

all pipes from front to back were 180 quid @ Quarry Motors sheffield, but my flexible pipes needed doing also and they were a bmw part at £110 (4 pipes - all the ends were badly corroded) they couldn't find aftermarket from their suppliers.

I now want to get under there and lubricate them all with something, grease or oil so it doesnt happen again.
 
had this recently done on a 1995 316i compact too and was around the same price, its a bit of a pain in the ass job apparently....
