Brake pipe replacement

I was aware of an outstanding advisory for corrosion of brake pipes when I recently bought my Zed. So I thinking about getting it booked in soon to be sorted. The advisory states “both front to rear and both to rear calliper brake pipes corroded at parts”.

Is this a sizeable task with tank drop? I’m not really thinking of tackling it myself, but just preparing for what sort of bill I might expect from a local indy.

I’ll probably get a couple of other bits sorted while it’s in. I suspect the drive shaft donut needs doing for one and a general check over for peace of mind.
 
It's quite a big job, I just had it done on mine, propshaft down, and I think subframe too. About 5 hours labour I think I was charged.
 
Thanks. Going to be fair size bill then. Will get estimates from a couple of nearby indys.

Has anyone here tackled this themselves, at home on the driveway? I’m imagining not if it requires tank, and/or subframe and/or driveshaft drop.
 
I might be wrong, but I'm sure it's possible with the tank and subframe in situ. The lines run round the tank rather than over.
 
Shame you are located where you are OP.

I had rear brake pipe advisories for corrosion twice on my Z4 so when I was up in Cheshire last year I got them both replaced in copper by ducklakeview for a very reasonable price (and a spare key while I was at it). The pipes both run inside a cover under the floor beneath the passenger seat, then separate a bit behind the seat to each side.

The offside one does seem to cross the car in front of the fuel tank, and I think the problem is that the way an OEM pipe for the offside is shaped means you can't wiggle it through the gap, whereas with copper you can! My BMW Indy was definitely talking about needing to drop the tank when I asked him about it.

For what I paid it might even be worth thinking about a short trip North - I'd definitely recommend getting a price from Mike before you make a final decision.
 
Easy job. I've done loads. Need a 2 post lift to do it with ease and a good flaring tool to join to steel pipes.
3 hours or less. Don't need INPA or any other scan tool to bleed the system out either.
I charge about £150. Pipes and fluid included.

I’ll get some quotes locally, but if that’s your price Andy it may be worth me making a trip up to see you.
 
Had mine done by DLV in copper which was a wise decision as steel will corrode again Cooper will not so total peace of mind and also a long ownership decision :thumbsup:

Do these in my sleep, replacing with Kunifer (copper alloy) that doesn't corrode. Couple of hours work, £150 including materials.

Hi Andy, i desperately need mine doing i live in loughborough so not that far. Could you please let me know if you could help me out with this, but i can only do weekends because of work commitments thanks.

Good to know Mike. :thumbsup: That’s two of you circa 200 miles / 3.5 hours away, but could very well be worth making the trip.

By the way, my car has your ‘tweaked’ OEM back box. Love the noise it makes!

Mike, have you done this on an m z4? I was also told it's a fairly big job, tank down etc because of the diff?
If not I may take a trip north to you back via Anglesey for this :)

Certainly was on my "to do" list but as fate intervened never got round to it, sadly. Looks like they were well past their best. :|
