brake pads

Hi all

Sorry if I'm covering old ground but I need some advice ref New Brake pads.

I want to change mine front & rear and after reading various threads I'm more confused than ever.

I've seen Brembo, Pagid, Bosch and others all for sale on Eurocarparts & Carspares4less, all at a reasonable cost but I have now read that ATE are BMW OEM? and are of course £14 more expensive per pair.

So my questions are as follows:-

1) Are any of these makes ok / compatible for normal road usage.
2) The ATE only seem to be available for the fronts from the sites listed so don't want to mix front and rear really!
3) Will I need to change or renew the fixing clips.
4) Will I need to replace the wear sensors. (The brakes have not worn down to the level where these have been actuated yet)

Any advice gratefully received.

Cheers.

1) not sure but somebody else will be able to advise better
2) as above
3) can re use the same clips
4) if your careful removing your old sensors then u dont have to replace them (ive changed pads twice and still using same sensor, but there only about £10 so its up to u if u want to replace it while your in there or not) remember there is only 2 sensors, front passengers and rear drivers sides (UK spec)

hope this helps :D

I've used pagid pads before on other cars with no issues, they will all be ok for normal road use
Regards

Frankly any branded make of pads is fine for road use. Simply because ATE happens to supply BMW OEM doesn't mean they are the same pads at Europarts as fitted, so I'd ignore that.
Def. go same brand all around if you have the chance to so.

You might also consider a low dust pad such as EBC, green or red. Save a lot of wheel cleaning.

Sensors - be ready to buy a new one. They are fragile and easily broken. About £6 on ebay

I did a bid of nerding before changing my brakes and dug up the following,

Textar are one of the OEM suppliers for BMW and are part of TMD who also make Pagid and Mintex world-wide.

Jurid are part of Bendix and make after-market OE Original Equipment Quality brake parts.

ATE bought out Dunlop brakes technology years ago and are now part of Continental Tyres again make after-market OE quality, and they all make stuff for the big car manufactures (ATE/Mercedes for example) and sell under other regional brands as well.

At the end of the day Euro regs prevent any brake component sold for ROAD USE from deviating by more than 15% in any performance criteria so in reality if it's a genuine big name part with a Euro stamp it's probably come from one of a few manufacturing groups and you will do well to detect any performance difference. Smaller so called 'performance' makers selling brake parts for road use may use silly names or colours on their parts but it makes no difference to the above reg's

I don't know what was in mine before, but they faded easily, not helped by only having a few mm on them, I changed to Brembo as they were the only branded ones in stock locally, I was going to upgrade at a later date..

I never upgraded because they are fantastic and I doubt anything could be achieved by changing them, im a late braker, late at night im braking for roundabouts at big speeds repeatedly (Milton Keynes), I quite honestly cant believe how good the standard brakes are.

My wheels give a bit more air around the brakes than stock, I used dot 5.5 fluid and im on P Zero silver tyres.

So she says Dave

A personal recommendation - pay a few quid more and get the cleaner ones. I think I bought the Textar ones but ATE (poss others too) also do them. I wasn't able to tell the difference in performance once bedded in and I make full use of my brakes....

What is different is that your wheels stay much cleaner for much longer.
