Brake pads

Have you changed them?
How long have yours lasted and have you changed the front ones more often compared to the front ones
Asking since my breakpad warning light came on today and changing all of them costs 500$ at the dealer

Yes on every car I've ever owned. It's easy cheap to do and I'd never give the dealer the pleasure of ripping me off for such a task.

Mileage is entirely dependant upon style of driving, location of driving. 10 miles in a city could wear them more than 500 on a motorway. Autos wear them more and fronts also due to them doing most of the work.

Several threads on it if you search

Yep, easy job. Did the X5 not that long ago, about 1.25 hours. Got just over 40k miles on them, back and front.

Changed the pads on another forum member's car at 38k. Costs about £50 if you do it yourself.

i got rear changed twice within 48k :)

our rear brakes do a lot of work compare to other cars. the car squats instead of dipping forward which I like

That's an intersting statement. Not disagreeing with it, but would like to understand the logic of it more.

Clearly our cars are lower than normal so that reduces the occurence and appearance of diving. You can also easily engineer in anti dive on suspension that stops the front dipping.

I'm curios if just because the car remains flatter the back takes any more braking effort, after all the weight transfer is taking place to the front just the same? If it did not then why would we need ventilated fronts and not rear and such tiny rear calipers??

Does http://www.zeckhausen.com/BMW/Z4.htm ship/sell to overseas locales? Awesome brakes etc on the site. I put the plain rotors for a 03 3.0i and Axxis Deluxe Advanced street pads on the fronts and only had one run around the track where I felt brake fade and it wasn't that bad either.

Has anyone tried the Cool Carbon pads? I see Bavauto has them . Here is a link about them :
