Brake pads

I know this has been discussed before and I have searched and read the threads but I can't find the exact info I need.

I'm getting new discs all round next week and can't decide what pads to go with them.

I saw a useful post a while ago from mmm-five:

The options for 'performance' pads are (average prices):

Pagid RS19/29 [yellow] (£195 for fronts, £165 for rears)
Pagid RS4-4 [blue]/RS4-2 [orange] (£170 for fronts)
Pagid RS14 [black] (£180 for fronts)
Ferodo DS2500/3000 (£185 for fronts, £90 for rears)
Performance Friction Z (£65 for fronts, £70 for rears)
EBC Yellow (£95 for fronts, £70 for rears)

For 'OE' performance the pad options are (average prices):

Genuine BMW from dealer (£100 for fronts, £70 for rears)
ATE (£49 for fronts, £37 for rears)
Pagid (£41 for fronts, £27 for rears)
Textar (£62 for fronts, £31 for rears)
EBC Red (£80 for fronts, £50 for rears)


Please can people post their experiences with any of these pads? For example, how do people find that EBC yellows differ from reds?

For me it's just fast road use. I don't want a lot of dust, don't want to spend a fortune (therefore Pagids are out) but would like a good improvement over OEM if possible.

Improvement for dust: Axxis.

Not noticed a difference with OEM, except less dust. They certainly don't perform better, depends on what you want.
 
I've got Axxis ULT's and i'm happy with them. Similar brake dust as the OEM ones, a bit more bite when warm and better heat resistance under sustained heavy braking. They do need to be broken in properly though. Note, i dont track my car so cant say if they last on a track but i do drive it hard on B-roads several times a week and i can definitely see a positive difference since changing to the ULTs. Not huge mind you but it's there...
 
Just to clarify my post: I am talking about Axxis DeLuxe here, not the performance pads that ga41 mentioned.
 
CA-Automotive has the ULT's for 82 for the fronts and 64 for the rears by the way, dont know how they compare to the EBC's at that same price range though....
 
Yo. EBCs all round for me, and they are RUBBISH! squeak, rattle, clatter.... do not bed in, etc etc. went back to OEM until i save enough wonga for the BBK.

Damolong, think i had the green ones. im sure if you search the forum we have been through this before... the pads are slightly too small or something making them wobble slightly in the caliper... when driving along it was like a heard of cattle!

Interesting thanks. I thought only red and yellow were available for the M.
 
hmmm not sure. the mechanic i use (and trust) did say that EBC pads are all the same regards the fit within the caliper. if i was you i would go for the pagid or ferodo. choices choices!
 
I believe my post referenced prices & availability for Z4M pads - which are different to the rest of the Z4s.

I've had Yellowstuff in mine for about 15,000 miles, they're currently about half worn and don't squeal or rattle (and haven't since they were bedded in). They produce much less dust than the standard pads, don't leave loads of pad material on the disc, and don't make any noise.

There's also now a Bluestuff pad, which is an endurance pad. Another step up from the Yellows, but is a no-bedding-required pad - and these are what I'll be going to when I finally need more pads (assuming I've still got the car).

I've not tried any of the others on the Z4M, but after going from DS2500s on my M5, to a custom-made set of Yellowstuff, I decided that Yellows were good enough for the type of driving I do - i.e. fast road and the odd track day.

I heard about the blues but thought they were track pads and not even road legal? Will they not be difficult to get heat into during normal driving?

There's a new Bluestuff pad which has the same part numbers but has an 'NDX' suffix (NDX suffix is important and the old Bluestuff pad is still available and is not road-legal) which have gained the ECE R90 approved status, so are now road legal.

Reports claim that they have a better initial bite (i.e. from cold) than Yellows due to their kevlar/aramid fibre construction, and perform at high temperatures for longer, but until I try them I won't know for sure.

Not asked for a price yet as my Yellowstuffs are far from done with, and as I said it's a new pad for these calipers so it may take a while for the 2011 catalogue info to get around.

I tend to look for e46 M3 pads as some places don't have the Z4M listed (the pad is the same on the M3/CS/CSL/Z4M), or where they do they don't have all the pads listed. But I can't really blame the resellers as it's EBC's catalogue that's not up to date.

I've got a contact in the technical dept at EBC, so I'll send him an email to see what the plans are for CSL/Z4M pads, and an idea of prices - but so far it looks like it's just fronts that will be available and you have to use yellows on the rear.

ETA, I've just seen the non-NDX pads listed (DP5689) on Performance Brakes website for about £90 - listed under Z4M as well as M3 - so you can possibly ask them about the NDX version too - and according to the EBC website DP5689NDX is a valid EBC pad number number.

Be certain of which version you ask about/order as there are 3 specs for Bluestuff pads, and only the NDX is road-legal in Europe (R90 certified).
 
I'm looking for some info about Ferodo DS2500 vs EBC Yellow... Which one are the best compromise for road + the occasional trackdays? Which one makes the most noise?
 
guys Do these EBC yellow / bluestuff / pagid pads have that highly corrosive brake dust that sticks you your paint?, i know some really high performance pads warn you that the dust is highly corrosive for wheels and the paintwork of the actual car (the brake dust does settle on the rear of the arch's after track use). Just wondering if anyones aware of the pads mentioned above as id like to upgrade to some pagids. EBC. ive been hearing lots of good things about ebc yellow stuff.
 
I have had (on another car) EBC Green Stuff and Red Stuff and would never touch EBC brakes again. I know they keep banging on about how the compound is much better now, but TBH I'd stick to either Mintex or Pagid (both the same company now). I had Mintex 1155s which were great but deposited friction material over the sides of the car, and Pagid RS42-1s which were as good as the Mintex but without the depositing problems.

Currently looking at pads for my track MR2 and have already discounted EBC due to previous poor performance. Same goes for Black Diamond stuff -- warped two sets of their discs on a road car!
