Hi all and merry new year. I have a 1.8i E89 and is remapped to 280 BHP/450torques with Bridgestone tyres, I am looking to uprate the brake pads and wondered what the best was for road use only? I have seen a lot about "greenstuff"? Can anyone advise me? TIA

Hi, your 18i (no decimal point :P ) can be fitted with the larger 28i front brakes if desired. I’ve used greenstuff pads on different cars & been happy with them but they do seem to polarise opinion for some reason?
I changed my rears to Textar and they’re fine.

If you use a brake pad that is certified for road use then they have to by defintion fall within a certain range of grip/wet weather performance etc..

Some people are keen on the Ferodo DS2500 https://balancemotorsport.co.uk/brakes/brake-pads/performance-brake-pads/ferodo-ds2500 but its not technically road legal

Textar as Smartbear says is an OE fit and good performance..I use them front and rear

I would personally upgrade your front brakes to a minimum of what the 28i has as your 18i is considerably more powerful now than what it used to be and above a stock 28i
 
I am using Ferodo DS Performance front pads on my 30i, they are for fast road use and road legal. They seem to perform really well. Stops real quick compared to what was there before. Unfortunately Ferodo don't do any performance pads for the rear so I bought some Textar pads for when I need to do the rears.

The Ferodo DS2500 are not street legal in the UK and Europe at least until 31/12/2020

Just out of curiosity - why aren't they legal?
I suspect they become legal when we leave europe - but I still wonder why the Eu says no!

They don’t meet the requisite temperature / coefficient parameters..

Brake pads are a compromise between performance from cold vs fade resistance when hot..

Race pads only work well when they are very hot..it’s unrealistic in 99% of situations on the road to find those conditions

So race pads work very badly for street use.

There are ranges of friction / fade performance and the Ferodo is closer to a street legal pad..but not close enough to meet the parameters where it could be certified...

I was teasing the Brexit guys ..post 1/1/2021 the regs will remain identical..
 
It all seemed to good to be true when their site boasts good wear rates of pad and disk etc etc !

The Ferodo DS Performance is not the same as the DS2500. DS performance ARE street legal whereas the DS2500 ARE NOT. DS Performance are fast road pads and not for track use whereas the DS2500 are for track use.
 
What do BMW put on? A variety of brands, I suppose. That said, whatever they put on mine, the front wheels get covered with dark grey brake dust very quickly. The car brakes well, though.
 
Been using Textar ePads here for a while on different cars.
Good performance, longevity and low dust.

Textar E pads aren't available for the E89, at least they weren't when I was looking a few months back for front pads on my car.

I think they use Pagid or Textar or maybe some other big brand, probably whoever they can get a good deal from.
 

Apologies you are correct in what you say...my point was that it’s the DS2500 that several Z4 people do use and that version is not approved for street use.
 
I have the epad on the E85 all round. Ive also done the 330i upgrade to 330mm on that car. They're ok i guess but I've never been that impressed to be honest. The bite just doesn't seem anywhere near as good as the pagid stuff that came with the car. Brilliant on the brake dust front though. But i would go as far as saying they negate the benefit of the bigger discs and calipers.

On the E89 20i I thought I'd be looking to upgrade pretty sharpish but I've been plesantly surprised by them. To be fair Iif I've still got the car when the time comes I'd probably be looking to upgrade to the 28i setup. I just don't think I'd use epads again. I might give the greenstuff a go.
 
Redstuff are excellent pads, partly ceramic and ultra low dust, no squeaking and no they dont wear your discs out. I popped them on my stage 1 35i with a set of DBA discs, also exceptional.
My first 'trial' was on the second day of 'spitited' driving at the 2020 meet, I nalied the car for all I could give it, no fade, no visible dust.
Highly recommended....
