Brake Pads - Problems Resetting Brake Service Light - Now Solved!

When fitting rear pads this can occur if the electronic handbrake was rewound by hand as opposed to using software. Ask the garage and then ask them to wind the handbrake to the maintenance position, then reset it via software.

They fitted the front pads only.

it is easy to rule out the sensor, just use jumper in the connector, the ECU checks for closed circuit, there are lots of videos on YouTube

in my case the parking brake had to be released to reset

Did you do the front or rear pads? (with regards to parking brakes needing to be released) I am going back to the garage today or Monday, they will check the sensor connections again and I'll ask them to test with the jumper as you mentioned.

Finally solved the problem! As mentioned by Tintoverano the parking brake has to be released before the light can be reset. Many thanks to everyone who contributed. Now just got to bed the pads in and see how they perform!

when it happened to me, I finally turned to ISTA-D to do the reset (nothing else worked) and when it couldn't reset the break either, there were a couple of suggestions on the result page what to try when doing the reset

releasing the parking brake was one of them

but why for front brakes?

Only BMW knows I had a chat with my mechanic this afternoon and he told me all these new cars have these strange quirks. He said on some Fords you have to sit in the driver seat and put the seatbelt on before the lights can be reset, now that is even more bizarre than the parking brake on our Z4s.

The car shows separate lights for front and rear axles, only the front pad light was on. So you wouldn't think the parking brake which on the back and which there is no light for would have anything to do with the front. But clearly although the car shows separate indicators for front and back in the inner workings of the car it's applying the same signal to both.
