Brake pads and discs...average lifetime?

Gents,

I've been told that my brake pads and discs need replacing 'soon', within the next 1k miles or so, considering I'm planning on doing a trip around Europe next month I thought I'd get them replaced.

However, my car has only done less than 20k miles and I was just wondering whether this seems reasonable, I know this is a bit of an open question because the lifetime of pads will vary from driver to driver and from car to car...just want to get a general idea. I've checked the discs and they look fine but am unable to visually check the pads, I would say that I drive enthusiastically and have taken it on one track day (evening actually!).

pads maybe but i would want way more than 20k from discs ,
guess it was a main agent recommending you spend some of your £££ on funding their glamorous receptionist ( worth every penny ) & facility's :D
what Z have you got ? ive been tempted even though my Z is ok for now with this package

did you come away with a quote ? just for our entertainment :D
 
Cheers, yeah, it was from a dealer, I forgot to mention they recommended only the front needed replacing, the rears are apparently fine.

They said that it would cost £325 inc vat, another main dealer quoted me £385 inc vat and an indie quoted £370 inc vat (using genuine BMW parts). The indie also gave me a quote for labour only should I want to supply my own discs and pads, which is the route I've chosen, they quoted me £125 inc vat and I've managed to get Pagid discs and pads from Eurocarparts for £77 inc vat.

I was tempted to go and uprate my brakes, I was looking for Pagid Fast Road pads but can't seem to get hold of them, I had them on my old car and was pleased with them.
 
My rear pads are due for replacement with about 40k on them. Discs are still in good condition.

Mine are on 45k, but they're due for replacement before I go back to the 'Ring in October.
 
125£ to replace discs and pads...... expect it to take 15 minutes each side and most of that will be jacking the car up and taking the wheel off.......

do it yourself its a doddle :thumbsup:
 
Brake pads of today are more abrasive than they used to be due to governments and other authorities finally admitting that after decades of apparently safe use in virtually every industry asbestos actually kills people.

Even so you should go through at least 2 sets of pads before discs need replacing but just like there is no asbestos in brake pads anymore there are no 'real' mechanics in garages anymore just 'technicians' who know how to replace components with new ones.

Mine were changed at 45k miles.New discs at 20k is too early IMO. I suggest a simple change of front pads will do the job.
