Having spent a lot of time messing around with E89 brakes, although BMW has 'cost engineered' many items I think the quality of the calipers/pads/discs are all a ok in this case..IMHO
 
Rear pads as well as being involved with stability control are also in use all the time you have cruise control on. The rear brakes are used to provide braking in the cruise system

Not when it comes to the brakes! I was told this by a tech at Ferodo brakes when I enquired about performance pads for the rear. Turns out they don't do any performance pads for the rears but he did tell me to just stick with the original BMW pads as they are off very good quality and probably better than most aftermarket choices available.
