Brake Opinions/Options?

Brakes need done, given the Z4C comes with brakes the size of a small moon I was tempted to just keep them standard but the modder in me.... not so sure  :P

Car is only used as a "fast road" car so no track driving or anything like that, what are peoples opinions/options/advice?

I have been looking at Mtec and was considering their drilled and grooved disks along with either EBC Yellow Stuff or Red Stuff pads, I have no experience with EBC though and am aware that one of the two tends to squeak when cold

Very much open to other options and what people have found is a nice improvement OR whether I should just stop it and stick standard :driving:

I've used (and been very happy with)

M-TEC discs (i went for dimpled and grooved with silver coating)
Textar e-Pad - these are ultra low dust producing and work a treat for me. They don't sell these on M-TEC. I bought them from Euro-carparts

Awesome thanks for that, I like the sound of those textar pads I find the dust off the current pads to be excessive (not sure what they are)
Thats something I wasnt sure about, whats the story with the coatings, I assume they are only there to keep the non contact parts of the disk "tidy"?

I also have e-pads and have been happy with them, stop fine and much less dust, they are about twice the price though. Can't comment on wear and haven't used them on track yet but don't expect them to be any worse than stock brembo etc.

Yeah, it just stops the exposed elements of the disc from rusting/corroding. Mine has been fine, lots of others don't rate the coating. It's essentially just a light coating of paint that you could apply yourself should you choose.

Yellowstuff pads and plain disks for me, disks were on the car and I couldn't tell you what brand they are but work well.

I do get a bit of noise, but not when driving round normally. They tend to make a bit of noise when they're cooling down from a proper blast with hard braking, which from contacting EBC is totally normal for the first few proper heat cycles.

When cold, they're certainly no worse than OEM style pads, but they have a very good bite when hot, and combined with ATE TYP200 fluid I've never had the slightest hint of fade.

This is in the 3.0i too, so 300mm fronts. The 3.0Si has 325mm fronts so even more cooling

Awesome, the idea of less dust def appeals to me! I am forever cleaning the wheels at the moment

Cheers for that! Might give it a look as its only £20 or so for all 4

Hmm interesting! I had read that the Yellows were quite noisy but then I have also heard the same about the Reds! I find the brakes on the car to be impressive as is but more bite is always preferred. Whats the dust levels like on the Yellows?

I was in a similar position a few months ago and after much thought I went for Mtec drilled despite some reviews suggesting that they may be prone to cracking / warping - after all they aren’t top of the range. At the price I thought I’d give them a chance.

I paired them with ebc yellow stuff and they are a massive improvment over standard. I can’t hear them any more than I could when I had oem brakes, even from cold they don’t squeak. Warm them up a bit and the bite is superb. I could get the oem’s to fade after a hard drive on the twisties and haven’t been able to push these to the point of fading yet.

RE dust.. they aren’t hugely different to the oem pads but I’d take a bit of cleaning for the performance gain any day of the week. I suspect most, if not all of the improvement I’ve experienced is in the yellow stuff pads. They look pretty cool behind the alloys too

We had a laugh at a fellow M5 member on the M5Board, when he told us he'd got his discs chrome-plated.

When we asked how much it was to bling up the hat/bell/hub, he replied he didn't know as he'd got the whole disc done!

I think his first couple of stops were scary, and then his expensive plating disappeared :headbang:

Could anyone advise where to get standard or OEM brake calipers for the z4 3.0 si, i need new ones and a BBK looks to much hassle to have someone fit especially on the rears

New will either be very expensive or remanufactured. Budweg do new ones for reasonable money and can be found online, though watch out for surcharges. I think I got them for about £50-60 each.
