Brake lines

Hi,

My BMW dealer said I have corrosion on the brake lines, an independant garage also mentioned this as well.
The interesting bit is that the BMW dealer said it would take over a day to replace them as the fuel tank needed to be removed (so £1200-1300 bill).
Independant garage said 1 hours labour + parts.

So a few questions -

1) Are BMW having a laugh? Is it really a 10 hour job to replace brake lines?
2) If I buy some 3rd party brake lines (like Goodridge or HEL) is there anything wrong with these?

Not done this myself but I'd get them to show you the problem on a 4 post, so they can explain the issue, then have a look at home on axle stands or at least more than just a jack. I suspect if it is the main front to rear they could be right as they do have a "creative" route.
There is always a tendency to do these procedures 100% by the book (which is correct and may be where the timing of 10hours is taken from), sometimes though there are a few creative ways that get learnt when a model has been around for awhile.

If you contemplate doing it yourself do stall the car before starting the procedure, do it in a well vented area and have a mate. Sorry can't help not done this on a Z4, perhaps someone will have.
 
I think you will find that they are referring to the rigid brakes lines that run from front to back. The Hel/Goodridge hoses are replacements for the rubber flexible hoses that join the rigid ones to the calipers.

I agree with this.

I also suspect BMW would replace every rigid line from master cylinder to each flexible and every uinion. I suspect an indy woudl replace corroded sections of tube only. The latter is where I would go.
 
As CJ has said, an indie will more than likely just replace the corroded section. No problem with that at all, it's what I'd do rather than pay BMW over a grand for work that isn't needed.
