Brake lights on - ignition off

Hi All,

Had a rather irritating issue come up with my E85 2004 2.5i. For some reason when I remove the key from my car my brake lights come on and are draining the battery. I’m going to try swapping the brake light switch out to see if this is the issue but I’m not so sure as when the ignition is on the brake lights work fine.

Anybody had anything similar or any ideas as to what may be the issue.

I’ve recently had the car back on the road and MOT’d after 5 months. There’s quite a lot of moisture in the boot which could have possibly shorted something? But again as all works fine when on I’m still not sure.

Which piece of the car would make the brake lights turn on when the ignition is not?! Send help! Please....

Cheers

Both brake lights or just one? Make sure your indicator stalk is not in the up position - this puts the offside brake light on when you switch ignition off.

Could be a battery issue. My car unaccountably came up with all lights on in the middle of the night despite all light switches turned off. In the old days this would have been spooky, but thanks to the Forum I replaced the battery which was still the original BMW item I would guess (from 2007) and problem sorted. Good luck.
Robert.
