Brake light on dash

After a bit of spirited driving the brake warning light came on in the dash. I know this will mean the pads are wearing down cos they advised me of it in the last service. My question is - why does the light go out again after a while and then come back on later? I thought that the light would come on when you braked (if you were low on friction material on the pads) and went off when you didn’t brake. Just curious.

The level sensor is effectively a loop that is inset into the brake pad, as the pad wears away it eventually cuts the loop which then brings the light on. No subsequent braking on or off will change the lamps state. Sometimes the loop is not totally broken and the odd strand remains and can make and break until worn that little bit further. You replace the sensor (loop) when you fit new pads.

That is what I thought. Does this mean I have another brake related issue because my light will come on and stay on for about 15 mins and then go off again.

You MIGHT have low brake fluid too which will give a flashing light as long as the wear indicators are NOT broken.

Ah, ok. Might be the “odd strand” thing. The light isn’t flashing but I will check the fluid in the morning anyway. Thanks for the replies.

I'm pretty sure there's a brake fluid level sensor which will trigger a dash light if the fluid goes low. If so, this would give an on/off light as fluid moves about in the master cylinder, especially so in spirited driving.

OP, not sure how handy you are with the spanners, but a pad change is very straight forward and about 20 mins a wheel. Fluid top up 2 mins.

I could manage that but it’s going in next week to get the suspension checked at the front and I might just get them to change the pads at the same time.

Will have a look at the fluid tomorrow though.

Once the brake pad sensor is worn through it stays that way, there is no on off thing or ‘strands remaining ‘. Your light will almost certainly be brake fluid related....the level does drop as the pads wear. Either way, new pads will bring the level back up and just top it up to the max with dot 4 or 5.1 fluid if need be.

Well topped up the fluid and it didn’t resolve it. Was in yesterday for new pads and sensors and now all is fine.

That doesn’t sound right, low pads won’t cause an on/off warning light as previously mentioned.
Something else is amiss here :?

I mentioned the 'strand' issue because I have had it on an E30. Replacement pads and sensors cured it. Would be interested if you can find an alternative answer?
