brake light issues Z4 sdrive 28I

I have a Z4 sdrive 28I m sport roadsters 2012. E89 with an N20 engine.
Trying to get the brake lights to work properly, the right hand side rear has a black socket/holder for the new lamp and now works. The left hand side is different, there are two electrical wires attached to a slightly different holder/socket and the new lamp does not work. Any ideas, is this unusual to have to different sockets/holders?
 
They changed the design internally at some point to get around early failures...maybe you have one of each...we’re the brake lights not working when you bought the car?
 
Swap the bulbs around, see if it makes a difference. I think as standard i have two different coloured fittings, why?
