brake judder grrrrrrrr

hi guys,

right, i have a problem with my brakes juddering through the pedal, its somewhat annoying seeing as i've replaced a lot of components recently,

So far i've done;

New front discs & pads (Eicher - yes i know, shite but i was curious to try see if it eliminated the problem)

New Meyle HD Wishbone bushes

New Meyle HD Tie rods

NEw top mounts

New wheels & Tyres all balanced up.

2 alignments - once before H&R springs, once after

Only thing i havent replaced is the rear discs & pads, which do look a bit worse for wear.

Im getting a vibration through the pedal AND slightly through the steering quite noticably coming off the motorway between 60-50mph.

So i thought it could be a sticking caliper but it doesnt pull to either side under heavy braking - there is a small old amount of fluid evident in the inside of the OSF caliper which i suspect could have been there a while as it isn't 'wet' if that makes sense.

Any ideas?

Cheers!

jamie

Few thoughts for you:

Have you done the bedding in process for pads of braking strongly from 60 to near zero 2-3 times, not stopping and then driving to cool them? That gets rid of pad deposits that are a source of vibration

Sticking calipers don't always pull. Easy to tell though as one will be much hotter than the other after even a short drive

Fluid on one caliper could contaminate the new pads if it gets worse. I'd replace it sooner than later

Rear disks and pads need replacing as they sound shot at.

thanks very much Jeeper - have done the bedding in process, no hot wheels either, will go with rear discs & pads first :)

I'd certainly get them sorted else you'll start chasing all sorts of more complex suspension stuff, given it's clear you've already eliminated many things like wheels tight, clean surfaces, tyre pressures, alignment, etc.

If this problem was there before the front disc change, double check the front wheel bearings and the mating face of the hubs to the discs for embedded hard debris? Beg,borrow a d.t.i.and check disc run out.good luck

Thanks for the suggestion , both wheels are tight no lateral or horizontal movement for bearings, will get a dti from work check the disc faces - thanks!

Yeah i must check tyre pressures actually, not done that yet, if only it'll be that simple

My M started juddering with fairly new discs and pads, after a suggestion on here I did a few hard stops from the...ahem..speed limit...and it cleared it, I was nannying the brakes. I know you'rs is'nt an M but it's a cost free excercise worth trying as CJeeper says.

EDIT: You've replied to that one. Sorry, as you we're.

No its a good suggestion John, i've done one hard stop from 70(ish ;) ) and then a few down from 30, so i might still need to bed them in

You've probably made it worse by bedding them like that , you need to get them properly hot and stinking to clean them up .

It's a great suggestion, John. Brand new discs and pads all round here and had a little bit of rumbling. Like you, I had treated them "with care". A really good blast and play with a GT4 over the weekend to and from Silverstone Classics saw me braking straight and true with no judder

That's not the method.
You need a good clear road and brake hard but not stupidly from 60 down to walking pace and back up to speed. Repeat a couple more times. Key is to not stop and then drive for a mile or so with minimal braking to cool them.
The object is to get them hot and it removes deposits that build up on the rotor face from granny braking.

From then on remember to never sit on the brake pedal at lights or junctions if you've been using the brakes. All it does is builds pad imprints and deposits on the rotor and starts the vibrations again.

Right I've just removed slide pins & cleaned them up as they were full of crap, took it out down quiet dual carriage way & done the procedure you stated above... Result is now horrendous! The brake judder through the pedal and steering wheel is now terrible (now they're hot) and its that bad the steering wheel shakes & clicks (like its waggling the steering coupler) help :headbang:

How did you manage to do all that in <9 minutes for me posting?

Did you copper slip the slider pins? Sounds like you have a significant sticking caliper problem

That caliper looks scrap to me, weeping fluid. Does the piston slide in and out with ease using a wind back tool?

I also thought you said new pads and disks fitted?
Those pads look old given the crud and rust on them. Either way agree uneven wear and pointing to a caliper.

oops i forgot to say i just did the discs as the pads looked like new ( i know i know school boy error) I havent checked yet if the piston moves freely - will get new propper discs & pads & a new caliper tomorrow - thanks again

Massive error. All you do is score the new disks with the wear pattern of old pads.
Lesson learnt I'm sure..
Disks should be OK and places like Europarts do good recon calipers.

Ah do you reckon I'll get away with just new pads then? Yes big lesson learnt this is the first time I've tackled brakes myself, thanks for all your help
