I don't know about this hole you say I am in. That's your fabrication. When B21 appeared on the scene, yeah, with a car that looked at lot like Pbondar's, Mr Dim here assumed it was not the same person. They don't even write in the same style. Pbondar never bragged, never rubbed in, never was corrected. A bit cheeky now and then, but a healthy dose of banter is OK. B21 isn't the same internet persona.

I've joined back in 2008, before moving to California, but never participated. I became active after buying the E89. And this is the only subforum I participate. Not even in all threads. I know my limitations. If other stuff is said elsewhere, I'm out of the loop.

Brake fluid service - extension of the first brake fluid interval to 36 months

Situation:
Beginning with production date 03/2011, the 1st brake fluid interval is being extended from 24 months to 36 months in all current vehicle types. After the first brake fluid renewal, an interval of 24 months each applies.

New vehicle series introductions are already equipped with the extended 1st brake fluid interval (36 months).

Vehicles concerned:
from 03/2011

MINI R55, R56, R57 and R60
BMW 1 Series E81, E82, E87 and E88
BMW 3 Series E90, E91, E92 and E93
BMW X1 E84
BMW Z4 E89


So for the benefit of the poster with a 2014 reg car he should have had the brake fluid changed at least 3 times, the last no later than 2 years calendar ..( frankly I don’t care if it’s Gregorian or Julian)

Normal service resumes..

I haven't been here long and don't know all the gossips. But I know the quality of explanations between Pbondar and B21 is night and day. Pbondar knew his stuff. B21 wings all day and then some. If it is indeed the same person, I'm afraid he must've lost his senses. That's a real pity. He had so much to offer.

I'm missing the point on picking on California like if it's a bad and slow place. I'm not from here. I merely live (and work) here. Those attempts at offending me don't offend me at all. Go figure.

The California bit comes from a bloke I used to work with who was a bit dim. We called him California as he was always a few hours behind the rest when it came to getting jokes etc. (Due solely to the way the earth revolves, time zones, etc.)

Though maybe, for someone who's been on the forum since 2008 and claims they haven't been here long, there's a little truth in the jibe.

For reference, here are some recommendations from other manufacturers.

Mercedes: The recommended interval for replacing brake fluid is every 2 years or 20,000 miles, whichever comes first.

Volvo: Change the brake fluid every other year or at every other regular service. The fluid should be changed annually on cars driven in conditions requiring hard, frequent braking, such as driving in mountains or tropical climates with high humidity.

Audi: Every 2 years

Porsche: Recommended every 2 years

Toyota: As a rule, Toyota recommends that you change the brake fluid every two years or 20,000 miles, although several factors can affect the interval. No two drivers are the same, and some are harder on their brakes than others. It can also depend on the age of your car, how much you drive, and where you mostly drive.

Other comments: "It should be replaced every few years, glycol based DOT4 is hygroscopic and most hydraulic system failures can be attributed to fluid dirt and contamination. Brake fluid in the calipers shuttles back and forwards and can get pretty dirty even if the master cylinder reservoir looks reasonably clean.
Don't wait for a problem to crop up, help protect your caliper seals and ABS unit with a fluid change, cheap in the grand scheme of things."

Typically, when doing a brake pad change, one would bleed the system at each wheel starting from the furthest going to the closest to the master cylinder / reservoir. Then at the end and during the bleeding, the reservoir is topped up. This process reduces the amount of moisture in the fluid. This is probably what happens on your cars during brake services.

However, this is still not a full system flush where the brake fluid is drained via the reservoir.

One other thing to consider is corrosion.Have you seen brake lines corroded? Have you seen MOT failures due to corrosion?
Typically, if you can see it, then it is usually caused by external factors such as water and salt. However, this can be caused from the inside as well due to moisture in the brake fluid.

When the warning lamp lights up, it does not mean that you absolutely have to change the brake fluid.
You can check it / test it using a brake fluid tester pen (<£8), reset the lamp and go on with your life. But do check on a regular basis and when it gets into the yellow levels, then change.
