Hi folks the brake fluid replacement light has come on.I understand your are supposed to replace the fluid every two years. Is this a job you must do or not ,if so anyone got any idea of the cost ,and if its not vital anyone know how to reset the dash light.

Brake fluid is hydroscopic, so it attracts water. Water in brake pipes = rust.

Not worth scrimping on as you pay later with the consequences. Costs about £70.

Water in the brake lines also means the fluid boils at a much lower temperature than usual and because water compresses more than brake fluid you get a spongy brake pedal with longer travel. If you go for a spirited drive you may be in for a nasty surprise when your fluid gives up!

Hi everone the brake fluid replacement light has come on ,can anyone tell me is this a must do item ,if so any idea how much is it to do or can we just leave it and reset the light,if so anybody know how to do it

I'm sure that there will be some experts along in a minute but my understanding is that it is something you need to do but your car will not immediately have a problem now that the light is on. Brake fluid absorbs water and BMW have decided that after two years there is enough water in the fluid to make it slightly compressible (ie your brakes are slightly more spongy than they were at the start). I also heard that the water content could start to corrode internal components but I'm not sure if that is true.

Edit: I was right - while I was typing this, all the experts beat me to it!

I will replace it too. I did not know that has to be replaced every 2 years. My Z4 is 2.5 years now.
