Brake Discs

Tried a search and not come up with much.

How long do people's M discs normally last, am sure on my E46 M3 they were still the originals when I sold it at 48k and they needed doing.

At 24k my M fronts have a fair old lip, bought at 7k so discs and pads still original. Loads of life left in pads which seems odd if discs are low, surely a couple of sets of pads to a set of discs - no??

What discs to go for, not going to upgrade brakes to AP or anything as happy with standard performance but will probably plum for yellowstuff pads or similar if I change them all.

I know it depends on how you drive it but 24k doesn't sound much especially if pads not very low, all confused!!

Graham I think that oem rotors ( and especially m rotors) are more than adequate for road use. They are also of high quality. You can try a different pad-rotor combination. For example you can try a softer pad which will give a better feeling and won't eat discs that quick. You will have to change them more often though.

Mine have a deep lip at 60,000km, the front discs are actually just below minimum thickness now (26.3mm, min thickness is 26.4mm, new disc thickness 28mm), but the original pads are at 7mm (4mm of wear still left). Min thickness is relevant when pads are replaced, so you can wear below that amount as long as you don't put new pads on when the discs are worn below that value. Of the 4 BMWs we've had, I've never been much above min thickness, if at all, after a single set of pads, so I always plan on wearing a set of discs for every set of pads.

I'm on 40k on original disks. I had them skimmed and they are spot on...Getting a little thin but no lip! Will change them in a couple of K tho.

Changed all 4 of mine at 35k around 5 yrs old. They could have lasted abother few k but decided just to change them.

Bought mine with 24k on the clock and i dont know if the discs were the original ones, anyway at 49k all 4 had a considerable lip and i swapped them all. I've also changed pads once before and by the time i needed to replace my discs the pads where worn almost completely down so i installed new pads as well. The last set of pads lasted well under 10k... I do drive it like i stole it though...

My Z4M is reaching 60,000km (37.000 miles) and the front discs are below minimum thickness. I need new discs, so it was a good time to order a AP BBK...

My fronts were replaced under warranty at 26K. Just replaced the rears with OEM at 45K. Put Stoptech pads on but not driven it enough to get the feel yet. They did produce a lot of smoke and smell going through the recommended bedding in process. For info, Jo at Sopers will beat BM Mini parts price on the discs.

Mine were around 680 quid delivered, shipping was about 145-150 pounds so about 540-550 for the discs alone.

Yes i know it's WAY more than what you guys pay but even with 150 quids worth of international shipping it was still hundreds of euros cheaper than buying locally.

Euro car parts £270 ish with 25% discount, on again this wknd code crazy25

Forgot to mention that it the 680 was for all 4 discs delivered here in Cyprus and i got them from Joe at the parts department of Sopers BMW.

Any BMW 'M' is a beautiful bit of kit, especially in Z form, but I recently found for my 3.0 SE a pair of Front & Rear Mintex discs for £36 on Ebay which I married to some RedStuff.

Can't help feeling there's a conspiracy the suppliers are just conditioning us to spend over the odds when it has the special badge.

they've put their prices up since, but they might be able to give u an even better offer if u check out this listings ebay shop & Deamon Tweeks for pads

Best of luck in finding some bargains
