Brake discs

Hello,

I need new front brake pads and discs and have been quoted the following from an indy (along with oil change). My first thought was everything looks reasonable apart from the cost of the brake discs, but thought I'd get the thoughts of some more knowledgeable folk aka the forum!

Perhaps the garage are just adding their margin on top which is fair enough given I'm not knowledgeable to do the work myself. What do you reckon? The quote is based on TEXTAR pads and discs. The indy tells me TEXTAR and TRW are OEM.

Labour to replace front brake pads and discs with sensor wire - £55.00+vat
Front brake pads - £52.30+vat
Front brake discs - £146.58+vat
Sensor wire - £15.89+vat

Labour to carry out engine oil and oil filter change - £37.50+vat
Oil filter - £14.81+vat
Environmental waste - £2.00+vat

You only need the sensor if it has been triggered.

The oil seems too cheap, but if you plan on doing it every 6/12 months then premium brand doesn't matter as much imho as long as it meets LL04.
 
Change the oil and filter yourself, its a really easy job, oil can be recycled at the tip, no charge.
Buy the best oil you can with the savings :thumbsup:
 
Personally I’d go ATE or Textar (both o.e.) both significantly cheaper via Auto.doc and today is only a 24% discount day.. their prices change daily.

They are excellent if you can be patient with delivery, no import taxes as set up for uk vat/tax but parts shipped from Germany.

I know some people have had issues with them but, other than a refund that took a little longer than expected, I’ve found them to be excellent :thumbsup:
 
Another +1 for Autodoc if you can wait a couple of weeks or so.

Personally, whenever I need to get garage work done I have started to source and supply my own parts and get them to quote on labour only. Most of the time I can get the parts cheaper than they quote (through various discounts and offers) and it means I can get exactly the brand/type I want (with the exception of oil at places that buy it by the barrel).
 
Thank you. Seems to confirm my initial thoughts on the price of the brake discs. I will consider sourcing my own although I'd be slightly wary of ordering incorrect/incomplete parts.

Re: oil change, I should have mentioned I am supplying my own oil so the price doesn't include that. Will also consider diy though.

It's super easy if you can get under the car. Screwdriver for the access flap and (I think) a 13 mm socket. Oil filter easy as it is on the top but worth getting the correct filter cup tool.
£45 isn't terrible but it's hardly an hours actual work.
